In the morning, after all their various routines, the party leaves the safety of the portable keep to return to the dungeon. As they leave the keep, they encounter Asteris, who has finished scouting the sea. The half-celestial reports that space bends back upon itself here, so that no matter which direction you fly, you always return to the island. Arthas offers to stay above ground, in case some other travelers happen by or the Maelstrom returns. The other heroes are reluctant to travel without their moral compass (and secondary healer), but Arthas insists. The rest of the party, including Asteris, take the descender back into the Under-Miami. This time, the party is more thorough in their search of the dungeon. They solve the Riddle of the Four Faces, defeat some strange corpse-jellies, and discover some strange potions marked ichor samples. Eventually, they encounter a small band morlocks. Lor does not have tongues cast, and Nor's appearance as a quasi-morlock (thanks to his still-living morlock hide) does not soothe the monstrous humanoids. They attack! The morlocks are faster and stronger than they appear. They use advanced tactics, attacking as a swarm and delivering bleeding attacks with their spears. Though the party is victorious, Lor is disabled, and no one else in the party can think of a way to return the cleric to consciousness. Undaunted, the heroes press forward. Past a cavern with a rickety bridge, they find a stairway that descends into a strange intersection. Setting off in a seemingly random direction, Malak immediately encounters two strange men. They wear motley, have painted faces, and (according to Elaryan) are insistent that the party turn around so that they "don't miss the circus". Malak has no patience for these clowns, and attempts to shove past them. Suddenly, the painted men become enraged! Their painted lips peel back in a snarl, revealing razor sharp teeth, and they set upon the party with vicious bites and razor-sharp claws. The heroes kill the men, but not before suffering grievous injuries. There is even a tense moment where it looks like Elaryan might perish, but Asteris saves the day. The half-celestial spreads her wings over the sorcerer and breathes life into him, returning him to health. Discouraged, wounded, and with no healers, the party discusses finding a place to rest.
