A Window to the Soul

I first started playing D&D around two years ago. My husband, Mark, introduced me. One of the things that drew me, aside from interactive story and tactical combat, is how the game gave a clear portrayal to a person's heart. The characters we play, and the things we practice and do in game, are more often than not an unveiling of what lies beneath the player's mask. For example, a few of you know me by my character Fianait Ahern. Out of my eight characters, she is probably the most intense. Morally, she walks a line between light and dark, but always leans towards light. However, she's not afraid to get her hands dirty, or upset people or companions in the process. The rest of my characters, aside from one who is a bit of a comedy spoof with a permanent state of madness, the rest all are inherently good people. I have dealt with players who have their character be absolutely profane and vulgar, kill other PCs, kill NPCs with the sole purpose of stealing from them, even one who wanted their character to rape an NPC. Are these things we should be dwelling on in our minds, things we should be practicing through our characters? More disturbingly, why are these things even coming into the players mind? Granted, I'm not saying that because pretty much everyone's characters run around killing monsters and casting spells, that we shouldn't play that way or that will even affect us spiritually. All I'm saying is perhaps we should all take a look at what kind of players we are and what kind of characters we play, and let that speak to us. Do your characters tend to be selfish? Vulgar? Profane? Perhaps that is a sign that you should pray and search your heart, and give your ear to the Holy Spirit. The Lord bless you and keep you, The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.
I think this speaks true as well, good job Fianait.
