I have a buddy who signed up for roll20 and his username like mine is the first name.last name initial. SO is there a way to find him in game because if I try to send a private message it says there are like 20 of him and none of them are him.

You can invite someone to a game via their email address. Presumably if you're friends in meatspace, you can ask him for his if you don't already have it. =)
