We've been playing a game for almost 2 years now and every time we play we have to refer to a player who keeps track of the time. At one point when we were in a city for quite a while we had the time typed out in a text on the over map, which was nice. Just like every game, a few of us can't make it to every session and so when that player doesn't we don't know what the time is. It would be so incredibly helpful to have the in game time listed up next to the tools on the UI. Something that would be updated by the GM, and then visible by all. He tells the player the time changes anyway. This would really help keep some immersion without having to stop a few times a session to ask what time it is. Not to mention the fact that these games are sometimes WEEKS apart, and not every session ends with a long rest at an Inn. If we want to look to a basic implementation, why not just have a small text box added to the UI that the GM can modify? It can be used for the time, or messages, or location, or anything and that would be a very simple thing that could be used for this very purpose. If we are looking into advanced development of the tool, you can add a meta data tag for maps and pages that signify if the page is a world map or an encounter map, after any significant movement on an over map it might prompt the GM to update the time as it takes time to travel across towns. It also might ask the GM to update the time when changing from an encounter page to a world map page assuming that the events have taken place and time has passed. Examples of what I'm talking about, simple but useful: http://imgur.com/a/TyeqG The whole idea is that the players and the GM will be able to run games that stretch across significant amounts of time without having to lose their place.
