Session 16

After the disappointment the party suffered last week when Nezznar escaped, I hope you all feel avenged now that you both defeated and caught him. Hopefully he will stand trial now that he has been placed in custody. But what lord will sit over the proceedings. Who will hand out justice now that Count William Winters is dead. Who will rule Phandalin. I suppose we will have to wait for next week for the answers to those questions. Today's session started quickly. Alex, Stefis, Jabril, and Michael were all online on time. We sorely missed Mike and Ridge, but didn't wait on them because I had a feeling they wouldn't make it. Jabril gave voice to Trix, constantly riding Bryndon about being a bastard. But without Ridge to give life to Trix, she couldn't hit anything she aimed at until the last round of the game when she critted and then rolled max damage on all her damage dice. With GFB and sneak attack she did 40+ points of damage on that one hit. It was beautiful. Of course the poor Ghast only had 1 hp left, but it was still sweet to watch all those green numbers appear. Rook on the other had hit everything he aimed at and was constantly critting. I don't think I ever saw him roll under a 20 on attack. He averaged about 26 hp per round in damage. In the beggining of the session his group was the only one to roll a random encounter as they made their way to the Spellforge. He and Jabril ran into a flame skull and before Jabri ever got a turn, Rook walked up to it and rolled a Nat 20 then did 34 points of damage on his first swing. With his second attack he knocked it out of the park like Babe Ruth. That first encounter set the tone for Rook for the rest of the session. Alex who played him wondered it Mike really was a hacker and had hacked roll20 to make a Super Rook.  Glanbir and Trix made their way through the Northern most canals to the large Cavern from which the name "Wave Echo Cave" comes. There they encountered a patrol of 4 skeletons. Bryndon and Riviera also encountered a patrol of skinnys near the entrance to the smelter, but their stealth rolls were better. Rook and Jabril came up from the South through the Poisonous Spore Cavern and thus blocked off any path of retreat from the Black Spider. They had no way of knowing that he had been dominated by the Wraith of Mormesk, the Arch-mage of the Phandelver's Pact. Mormesk's undead minions did their job well. They bought him enough time to finish his Staff of Power. Unfortunately for him, Nezznar pumped the bellows too fiercely and over heated the adamantine Spider that topped the staff, the staff that once had belonged to him. Could this have been a last act of rebellion against the domination of his new master? Either way, Mormesk had to quench the staff and pulled the chain to release 55 gallons of water from the copper reservoir. This cool water on the super heated stone of the forge caused it to break releasing the Fire Elemental who had been imprisoned there by the Dwarves over a millennia ago.   Finding that the water hadn't stopped the chain reaction in the adamantine figurine atop the staff, he left you to battle the Fire elemental, while he went through the Northern wall and toward the body of water in the cavern to the North.  Not knowing the danger he was in, the Elemental floated atop the forge he had powered for over a thousand years, gleefully lusting after the death of everyone he saw, yet poised above him was a 200 gallon tank of water. Finally Glanbir yelled out for someone to release the water on the creature. This was the difference between life and death. If no one had dumped the cold water on the elemental, this surely would have been a TPK. Luckily before he could remove himself from the forge, Riviera pulled the chain and dumped 55 gallons of life giving fluid on him, causing him 55 points of damage. Even after he stepped down from the forge another pull of the chain caused him to take more damage while quenching the flames that kept Bryndon and Riviera alight.  Eventually Nezznar the drone was defeated, then healed with a potion, then knocked unconscious by Trix. The Elemental was also defeated. Finally even Mormesk was defeated before he had a chance to use his new Staff of Power. It glowed white hot after he fell. Bryndon tried to pick it up, but had not the force of Charisma required to wield such a weapon. The only enemy that remained was the parties own cleric who had been possessed. Glanbir didn't respond to questions, but he did try to bonk Riviera on the head. Bryndon deduced that he was possessed and the party killed him to drive the spirit out. Then the Ghost itself was defeated, leaving only fire as an enemy. Stefis said he never thought the party was in trouble, but I worried that even without enemies to fight the fire itself might destroy you. Many were down, others at only a few hp. A failed death save here or there could have taken someone out permanently.   Here we called the game. You did well, you triumphed. Even more important, you survived. Now you just have to find a place to rest with out running into anymore flameskulls. There is one more available for random encounters. I hope no one rolls a 20 next week. XP:   600 xp - 12 Skeletons 1800 xp - 4 Ghasts 2200 xp - 2 Ghosts  700 xp - Nezznar, The Black Spider  700 xp - Mormesk 1800 xp - Fire Elemental 7800 xp Total divided by 6 = 1300 xp each Loot:  Spider Staff (Unidentified), There are micro fractures in the adamantine alloy formed by the out of control magical chain reaction and the quenching process in the sulfurous lake. sounds like  everyone did a great job if anyone used their inspiration i say they deserve it back. whoever ran rook thank you so much for keeping him alive as well as making him look like a great fighter as well as having the Yankees offer him a contract as designated hitter. lol
I nominate both Bryndon and Alex for helping out Andy by playing other characters in ways that the creators would be happy
rook wasn't here but his rolls were amazing and he saved the black spider so i nominate him
Alex, Stefis, Jabril, and Michael please accept inspiration for your efforts last week.
