Self-Revealing Maps, or Can You Make Maps That Unveil Themselves Like in Final Fantasy IV DS?

As the topic states, something I'd really like to know how to do is to, essentially, make maps that reveal more of themselves as the players explore dungeons and caves and whatnot. In the aforementioned Final Fantasy game, you had a little map on the touch screen that would slowly record itself as you entered each particular area, telling you what percent of it that you've been through, and giving you a prize for every 100% map you have. I'm trying to incorporate that kind of thing in my game (get a map that writes itself totally done, and you can turn it in for a reward), but Dynamic Lighting wouldn't work because it's too  dynamic (and I also don't have the pro membership or whatever it is that lets you have access to such things anyway). The only way I can think of would be to make patches of Fog of War all over and delete them as the players go through, but that sounds like naught but an exercise in frustration. Is there any other way to get that kind of effect without yanking tufts of my hair off?

If you were a pro subscriber, I would recommend the dynamic lighting with an API script that drops a light source every so much movement. I can't remember the name of the script but it would do something similar to what you want.
