What is society-style play?

I stumbled upon the term 'society-style play' in the wiki , but I wonder what that really means: For example, in society-style play you have a single Character that you play many different game sessions with, across different GMs, etc. Google did not show any useful results. Does it mean that all players can be the GM at one point? 
That sounds a lot like Adventurers League or a living campaign. Basically all the characters are in the same shared world.

Just to be clear, that means one virtual common world that is played in many different accounts, or games. They share the same history and events, but you would need to use the Character Vault to move from game to game.
