Play by Post Help

I'm considering using roll 20 to GM a play by post game because I've heard about those types of games and it seems like the best fit for me right now but I don't really know what it is or what it means. Can anyone explain or help me understand how a play by post works?

A play by post game is just a text based game that allows players to make posts when the Gm is not there. It runs constantly. There must be trust between everyone. It is also a slower game then most people prefer. An excerpt from my play by post game. I had to remove the formatting but you can get an idea. This is a slower paced game but the posting happens around the clock when someone has time. Balim just started to wake up Rorkhan when a great big flash of light flared through the cracks of the barn wall. The sounds of Marcus, who was sleeping outside near the back of the barn, screaming and yelling is heard along with yelping and barking sounds. Before anyone can react to that another sound is heard as something blows a board apart up on the backside of the loft wall.. (To Canso): your flash spell goes off and you will also get fire blindly with the bolt. The flare went off in your face along with the humanoid. (To Canso): I took the liberity of you putting the bolt through the back wall of the loft. Balim scrambles to find a place to hide Balim then (if possible) starts to crawl up to the side of the barn to look through the cracks (To Balim): Peering out through the the cracks you can see in the fading light of a flare Marcus flailing about while yelling and what appears to be a dog faced humanoid a short distance away from him. That humanoid is rubbing it's face and muzzle in the grass while whining. Rorkhan Flameaxe: Rorkhan grabs his axe, swings down from the loft, and does a quick recon looking for the quickest way out of the barn. Metroknight (GM): (ooc: two paths that will get you out the barn. 1: go through the wall (Oh Yeah) or 2:out the door and around the barn.) Balim pulls out his shortbow, draws an arrow and sneaks up to the hole in the barn Balim has his bow in hand with an arrow ready but realises he can not climb the ladder up into the loft with his hands full. Stumblebum: Stumble grabs his sword and his bow and quiver and leaps down unto a ready made pile of hay. He'll then make his way toward the loose boards, but of course watching to make sure it was safe and that nothing was coming through the boards. Hopefully he will be able to see whats going on before he gets all the way to the boards Balim puts the bow away, climbs the latter, and then draws it again and sneaks up to the hole Stumblebum grabs his gear and launchs out of the loft to plummet into a pile of straw below as Balim scurries up the ladder into the loft and rushes over to the hole blown into the wall. Rorkhan gives the barn a quick look about then rushes towards the loose boards with the apparent intent of crashing through them and out of the barn. The flare of light that lite up the entire back of the barn is fading away to leave faint moon light. Balim looks down to see Marcus staggering about in the appearance of not being able to see while there is a dog faced humanoid rolling about on the ground while rubbing it's eyes and yelping. Stumblebum gets a quick glimpse through the cracks of the board to see the backside of Marcus with the dog faced humanoid about 10 ft beyond him that is rolling about while rubbing at it's eyes and is yelping. Rorkhan sees coming up fast as he rushes at them, the barn boards that was loose. He thinks he can fit through them with little to no problem. Balim , while trying to remain hidden, shoots the dog faced humanoid. Rorkhan Flameaxe: Rorkhan puts his head down and heads for the loose boards, intending to bust through. If he can fit through with no problems, he will, but if not he will simply make his own opening. Stumblebum: stumble will follow Rorkhan through, then will quickly look around teh area to see what else might be seen. Balim: Longbow hits AC rolling 1d20+1+2+2 (20)+1+2+2= 25 rolling 1d8 [damage] (7)= 7 Rorkhan crashes through the wall and in the process makes a dwarven sized opening. Stumblebum follows through the hole. As they gather themselves to look about, there is a flit of an arrow with a meaty thunk and the dog face figure lays still. Stumblebum: stumblebum stops suddenly when he sees the dead kobold, "well, there won't be any questioning of this little beastie." he then go check on Marcus and try to find out what happened from him. Marcus Highwater: Mr. Stumblebum, is that you? I seem to have blinded myself; I can't see a thing. Stumblebum asks, "Calmly, now. Calmly. Just relax and tell me what happened." Marcus Highwater: Something poked me awake with a stick I panicked and cast some spells. All I can see now is spots. (From Balim): I have a shortbow. Balim climbs walks through the hole out into the opening, still holding his bow. Stumblebum looks toward Balim coming out of the barn. "Why did you kill the Kobold? It didn't look to be in a position to hurt anyone."

There are what appears to be repeats in the text but that is where I summed up actions that was happening or just happened so everyone knew what was happening in sequence.
