[LFP][D&D 5E][Wednesdays, 6:30pm PST/PDT] Critical Role Tal'Dorei Setting Campaign - 4 to 5 more players needed!

Hello, Roll20! We are currently looking for 4 - 5 more likeminded individuals to play around in Matt Mercer's recently released campaign setting. As it says in the title, we'll be playing at a start time of 6:30pm PST/PDT or roughly around there and always on Wednesdays. Some details about the game and sort of players we are looking for: must be 21+ in age. The DM and I are both adults who prefer to play with adults, sorry kids! don't expect a classic dungeon crawl. Be prepared to bring on the RP. we expect everyone to be committed to regular gameplay, so please don't apply if you aren't sure! If the occasional absence happens, we expect reasonable notice ahead of time so that the DM can prepare for it.  no Unearthed Arcana classes. We're sticking to the PHB + Matt Mercer materials. Further, due to events that have transpired in the lore/history, no dragonborn adventurers will be in the party. as far as alignment goes, party members should be somewhere in the same neighborhood. so chaotic evil is probably out.  be respectful to your fellow players. Out of character racism/sexism or any other sort of bigotry is no. On the flip side, be aware that these sorts of things may come up in character and in game. But that's where they should stay. must be able to use discord! That's what we'll use both for text and audio. Currently, we are audio only, so you don't need to worry about a good webcam. there will be an interview for prospective players to make sure the chemistry and goals for the game are all in line with each other.  If you're interested, please fill out this little form so we can know a bit more about you and we'll be in contact. Name: Age: What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? ex: political intrigue, extensive character development, ethical dilemmas, etc What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: ex: table talk, min-maxing, slow plot, feeling rushed, etc Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?: Thanks! If you have any questions, feel free to ask here.  - cami
Hey Cami, My name is Sha, and I am very interested in joining you guys. Honestly though I know nothing about Critical Roll nor the setting the game takes place. I am more than willing to learn about it though. I enjoy first and foremost playing to my character. If I am playing a gladiator style barbarian, I will be drawn to arenas and challenges of the blade rather than politics or magical artifacts that are not weapons. On the other hand if my character is more of the academic type or a skulking rogue, I will try to do everything to avoid direct confrontation. I also enjoy development between party members. Many games I have been in tend to ignore that because out of character, we are all here to play DnD, but I like to make connections between characters to make the game feel more authentic. I enjoy almost any way a campaign is played, whether it be combat orientated, full of puzzles or even text based games, as long as we are playing. What I get frustrated on is when people get off topic of the game and start to have conversations relating to other things in the middle of the game. Its understandable when it happens but when it becomes a reoccurring event that happens in every game we play in, where people are talking for an hour about random topics, it starts annoying me. The time fits for me well as long as we don't stretch into something crazy like 8 hours of game time. I can't see a reason why I wouldn't make it to every game. A few questions for you guys are: -How many players do you plan to have in total? -Would you be able to tell me more about the setting, or a place where I can read up on it, as well as the Matt Mercer material? -Are the non Unearthed Arcana material allowed? Such as the Sword Coast Adventure's Guide and the races from Volo's Guide to Monsters? I am looking forward to hearing back
Name: Paul Smith Age: 25 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? I have been a long time fan of CR and have only recently been able to start playing. But what I love the most is getting into my character. Really trying to do what they would do and not me. I love telling and improvising stories. So tlrd role play What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: I'd have to say table talking and players operating on knowledge their character doesn't have. Meta gaming. And players who turn into murdering hobos. I like to both do things in combat AND diplomatic not just stab my way out. Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?: My work schedule is never exact but 9:30 my time so it should work out great, I might only have a 15-30 min delay at that time if something goes wrong. This is my current character that I have created if it would better help you understand what my role play is like, that is only a taste of his backstory though. I want to save the rest for everyone (except the gm) to find out on their own. Trimac Banesword Race: Tiefling Class: Paladin Age: Late 50's (still young for a tiefling) Alignment: Lawful Good Trimac life was created in chaos. His mother Altisha was a slave to the demons of the Abyss. She was tortured brutalized and raped by her captors all her life. Still young before turning the age of 16 she noticed her was beginning to change and her stomach and begun to grow. Only because what her fellow captives had told her did she know she had become pregnant. Over time as her body changed more and more and grew larger and larger, she had planned an escape. Not for herself, but for her child. Her master, a demon by the name Banesword, had watched over her carefully as they waited for her child to come. When the day had finally come she had given birth to a young boy. But he was different, still pale as a human as she was, the same small splotches of black hair as her own. Though horns where sprouting from his head, a small tail hung from his lower back. She clearly saw the heritage of the demon who had forced himself on her showing on her child's face. Though she did not despise the child for his appearance. Her master had ordered her to care for the child and named him Trimac. He kept her under the guard of one of his lackies at all times. Never was she alone to make her attempt to flee with her child. she bided her time as the boy continued to grow, she knew she had to get him out soon before he was old enough to be influenced by his father. And finally the day had come when another demon had come to make an attempt to kill Banesword, all his guards called to his aid Altisha finally took her chance to flee. She took him to the Blood Portal, she had seen it many times. Slaves having their bodies cut open spilling blood on the altar to open a portal, always opening to different places. She placed Trimac on the platform where the portal would appear. She approached the altar and thought long and hard about places her fellow captives told her about. Cathedrals to the gods, enemies to the fiends that held them. And one came to the forefront of her mind, one she had heard so much about Bahamut. As she closed her eyes preparing to do anything for her child she felt a warmth she had never felt before reassuring her. She plunged the Altars dagger into her chest just as her guard came barreling twoard them. And in a blink as her vision began to blur she watched Trimac disappear as the portal closed, guard shouting as her mind fades.
Sha said: Hey Cami, My name is Sha, and I am very interested in joining you guys. Honestly though I know nothing about Critical Roll nor the setting the game tag......... hey sha! Actually Critical Role is a D&D livestream show that is at over 100 episodes now. They can be watched on the Geek&Sundry YouTube channel or on their website. It's a wonderful show and a great way to learn all about the setting.
Name:Kyle Age: 31 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most?  I love some good character building and working off their back story and learning more about my character as we go. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: I would say Min maxing to an extent.  As long as its not over done its fine.  Meta gaming is a huge no no.  Stick to your characters personality changing their personality because of the situation to prevent them or forcing them do something really puts a hitch in the game. Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?:  Scheduling should not be an issue thats roughly 7:30 my time so I would be in for the night and available.  I don't for see any conflicts at all with this. I have questions but i suppose those could be answered in the interview time if available.  You can message me here or on discord (Ortrinex#5260)
Name: Daniel Age:28 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? I like to role play others expanding the world and the people in it. I do like my combat but I also interacting with other trying to see other ways to solves things. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing? A slow plot can be annoying but it is how things are at time. Talking across the table about things outside of the campaign is not ok, but in game character talk with each other while things are happening and that is fine as long as they do not detract from the DM. Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed? it is fine for me, that is 9:30 my time. My only thing is that I would like it if we can keep it no more than 3 hours because I do work at 10:00 am the next day. Other than that, I would like to play in this as I have been loving the world of critical role.

Name: Terrence Age: 26 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? : I love Character Development, those moments where characters click. I like some puzzle and i love to roleplay. Combat is a bonus for me. I can change my voice to help with roleplay. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing? Feeling Rushed and meta gaming are big for me, also players plotting against other players just to piss them off and incite some problem. Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed? No, these times are perfect for me. I'm in EST Timezone, so 9:30 EST is very doable. (Edit: Used google to translate PST to EST, used that time by accident) I love coming up with character ideas, and talking about what we can do and can not do. I love making player dynamics and trying out fun ideas. Im very interested and i hope that you can talk to me to get a vibe from me, and potentially choose me to play. Im a big fan of Critical Role. I look forward to your interest in me and i hope i get a reply soon.
Name: Buddy Age:29 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? I like creating a community story that keeps going and becomes more than I had originally hoped. I always have character ideas and evolution in my mind, but it never survives the first encounter with the group..everything changes and evolves and molds into something better than it was before. Just like in improve, you keep saying "yes, and?" and I love to see just where the 'and" takes me What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: general bickering, in fighting, anything that kills game play and focuses on an individual rather than the game or party Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?:no
Name: Chloe Age: 22 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? Court & Politcal Intrigue are two of my favorite aspects of a campaign! I really dig character's that have what it has to survive a cut-throat area disguised with powdered faces and formalities. I really enjoy the ongoing development of relationships between the party members. I love when it occurs naturally and even in the heat of battle. The best groups are the ones that are ride-or-die, no matter their personal differences. Character development and an eventual re-touching of each character's substory is also a big interest of mine. The method in which Mercer had Vox Machina revisiting their plots (De Rollo Family Dilemmas) and how it ultimately tied into the over-arching storyline was brilliant and I aspire to be a part of a campaign that follows that technique. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: I find myself most frustrated with a lack of character consistency and players who self-insert, as opposed to making the decisions that are true to their character's personality. I believe in naturally occurring progression and character growth, and when people alter that, it can really subtract from the story. I feel happy just being in a campaign where I can bring my character's to life, so pacing doesn't bother me much! Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?: Although I just began a new job, my schedule fits with Wednesday evenings pretty well, so this works perfectly for me. Side note: I have been watching Critical Role religiously for the past year or so, and have become well-versed in the universe, thus far.  :)
Hi i am a Dm and looking for fun adult group to join and have some fun. Have not had much luck with a good group staying together . I truly hope you put me in consideration in your selection or at least let me know if the spots are filled
Name:Chance Age:32 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? ex: political intrigue, extensive character development, ethical dilemmas, etc I just love to get into Rp and make a very extensive character What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: ex: table talk, min-maxing, slow plot, feeling rushed, etc they major thing is not being able to be consistent in playing and working out all my character stuff just to have to throw it away for another campaign Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?:Im in central hope thats ok
I would be interested. The time works for me but I'm EST so I can't play too late.  I'm Conor, I'm 29. I love RP and action, probably equally. I like the Tal'dorei setting though I haven't watched all of Critical Role. I want to feel immersed in the game and my character. UI like more direct situations than constant tension filled intrigue. Things that annoy me include metagaming, powergaming and players who want to show off that they know more about the setting.
Name: Jordan Age: 30 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? Challenges with multiple potential paths to victory, Role play opportunities for more than just the High Charisma folks, Challenging strategic combat. Optimization never bothered me; it's fun to be good at your chosen role but must be balanced with srtong character. Recurring NPCs with personality. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: Metagaming by player or DM, Railroading, Lone-Wolf PCs Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?: I'm on EST, your start time is 9:30 for me I expect no conflicts. I just started the Critical Roll podcast this week! Would continuing on risk spoilers if I am accepted? I had to stop listening to Dice Camera Action when I was invited to a Curse of Strahd game lol. Over 15 years of tabletop experience. Great attitude. Looking to contriubutte and have fun!

Name: Charles Age: 27 Experience: I've been playing D&D 5e for a year now. I've branched out to a few other games like Dreamscape: Laruna, Majimonsters, Mutants & Masterminds 3e, and Chronicles of Darkness but D&D always pulls me back in. What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? Character development is at the top of the list for me. Seeing the party or important reappearing NPCs grow is incredibly interesting. Haven't had alot of chances for political intrigue or hard hitting ethical dilemmas but the idea of them excites me. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: Starting at level 1 and sticking there for multiple sessions, people eating or yawning into their open microphones, and a very minor annoyance is people announcing actions with mechanics. (e.g. "Can I use X Skill to do Y action.") These things really throw the game off balance in an off putting way. But they're all minor gripes in the end. Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?: No problems at all . I'm in the CST timezone so game time is 8:30pm for me so all the days errands if any are far past done. As a player I tend to play support roles either mechanically or in roleplay. I enjoy having fun with the party or NPCs for better or worse. If I can get the party into or out of an interesting situation without getting them killed I just might try to. I like to joke a bit with my groups but I do get serious as the scenarios call for it. Being a part of a more serious campaign is something I'd very much like to do since most of the settings I play in are more lighthearted. I am on Discord for most the day and am available to answer questions or talk as needed. Thank you for your consideration.

Name: John Age: 26 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? ex: political intrigue, extensive character development, ethical dilemmas, etc: I enjoy being wrapped up in and enveloped by a great world and story that is still able to bend to player agency. This is something I think Critical Role, and more exactly, Matt Mercer does well, create a fantastic story while still allowing the players to leave their mark on the world and events that take place. I like creating a character that both affects the world around him, and is affected by the world. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: ex: table talk, min-maxing, slow plot, feeling rushed, etc: I don't necessarily mind a slow plot as long as it feels like progress is being made, I've run with a few DM's who overuse random encounters to the point where nearly entire sessions were various random encounters that meant absolutely nothing and the entire sessions had no progression of plot in any way. Don't get me wrong, random encounters can be great, they help to breathe life into the world! But in "Hexcrawl" style games it just makes any semblance of plot irrelevant. Of course sometimes players derail the plot a bit too, as with "shopping episodes" and that's totally ok! So long as there's not multiple sessions back to back to back of zero plot progression, then I don't mind. Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?: There's no scheduling issues with the Date/Time listed, and I could even go earlier or later by a couple hours depending on what the rest of the group needed. The only days I wouldn't be able to play on are Sunday and Monday. If you have any questions feel free to PM me!

Name : Chel Age : 21 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most ?: I really enjoy the heavy RP, character, and story focus (which is why I love critical role and really like the look of this listing). Playing deeply and long enough to have some real character development is my favorite thing. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing ?: The "murder hobo" style of playing is definitely my least favorite. Going along with that, I also really don't like metagaming--both in terms of using specific knowledge your character doesn't have, and in terms of acting out of character to play the game while ignoring the story. Also, while I like the psuedo-open world feeling of a living world and the opportunity to make choices with real effects, I can start to feel really pointless in truly open world games, where there isn't a significant in-character motivation/purpose or out-of-character story/plot. Obviously some of that can be made with character backstory and creation, I just don't like feeling aimless :) Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed ?: Nope! I'm in PST as well, so that time is great for me. As for questions for you guys: Besides the exclusion of dragonborn adventures, are there any restricted / modified / encouraged kinds of characters? Is there a particular character you're intending to make? Alternately, do you prefer to create characters together after everyone's assembled? Final note--I've played campaigns before offline, I have discord, and I shouldn't have any problems using voice, but I've yet to play d&d online so I hope you guys won't mind being a little patient with me on that :) Happy to answer any questions here, over PM, or on discord!
Name: Thomas Age: 28 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? ex: political intrigue, extensive character development, ethical dilemmas, etc. I am a huge fan of roleplaying in general. I have a tendency to get lost inside my character during a session. So rich, character development and deep exploration of backstories are a huge draw for me.  What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: ex: table talk, min-maxing, slow plot, feeling rushed, etc There isn't much that can set me off if I'm playing just because I love D&D so much. But cross talk can get annoying. It's a little harder to manage when not playing in person though, which I understand. Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed? As of right now I don't have a set schedule. But I'm typically off on Wednesdays. There is the off chance I might get scheduled to work on Wednesday nights. But since i am in the eastern time zone, it would only make me about 30 minutes late for game time. Thanks for your time and consideration! My discord is Thomas#0712 just in case you need it.

Hey everyone! Just popping in to let you know we're going over the replies and should be contacting some people here soon. I also wanted to answer a few questions that came up: group size will be 5-6 PCs + 1 DM.  game play will probably be between 3 - 5 hours long per session.  The DM currently prefers we stick to the player's handbook + Matt Mercer materials, so no to SCAG or Volo's. as for other preferred or restricted character types/races/classes, aside from no dragonborn PCs there isn't anything else currently.  as far as character creation, we'll likely be doing this all together as a group. The main reason we're not looking for any concrete character info right now is because ooc player chemistry is higher up on the list than PC stuff right now, but it will likely come up during follow up. I have a couple ideas for mine, but I like other people to talk about what they want to play vs what they think will fit based on what may or may not already be "claimed" if that makes sense.   If there are any other questions, feel free to ask and I'll get back to you! The interviews will be starting on next Wednesday the 16th, so I'll be in touch with the people we are looking at moving forward with. If you don't hear from me, still thank you for applying and we wish you the best of luck in your future D&D endeavors.
Will Goliaths be allowed? I would assume that they would be, but I figured it's always best to ask especially since it was mentioned that only the PHB and Matt Mercer materials would be allowed. It's not a deal breaker of course, but it was one of the ideas I had for a potential character if I was invited.

Hey there! My name is Brandon and I'm a 24 year old undergraduate engineer in my last year at college. I really 'discovered' DnD a little over a year ago when twitch introduced me to Critcal Role. Shortly after I joined a campaign here on Roll20 and have been learning head first ever since. Concerning plot, I particularly enjoy compelling stories, raw emotion, and vivid scenery. It's the psudo-realism of the dramatic combined with the emotional connection of the player character which really can get the heart pumping. It's those sort of moments along with meeting fantastic and creative people, experiencing magical moments, and exercising seriously meaningful character development which makes DnD worth it for me. I'm looking to join a fun group of people play along with an interesting story within a setting written by one of the most influential people I've ever known. This is why I'm here! So hopefully I'll get a change to play and share some good laughs with everyone. I'll fill out the questionnaire below -- Name: Brandon Age: 24 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? ex: political intrigue, extensive character development, ethical dilemmas, etc Some of the most compelling story elements of the game can be when the campaign setting interacts with a character's background. As a player, you could spend many hours creating short stories, building NPC friends and family, and researching subjects directly related with your character's theme. The thrill that comes when it's time for the story to cross paths with your hard work creates some very intense and actually intimate moments. If your character's backstory is something dear to you in some way, then in a way the campaign brings player's stories to life in ways that nothing else really can. On top of that, this concept extends to sharing moments with other players as well. It's completely possible to get entranced with another player's backstory more than your own, with a desire to take a larger role. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: ex: table talk, min-maxing, slow plot, feeling rushed, etc When beginning a campaign, I think it's important to sit down with everyone and make a decision on what kind of campaign the game will be and what level of seriousness should be taken when creating characters and backstories. While many character types can be fun, sometimes players and even the DM can have different ideas on what type of game will be played. As a result, players can get a bit frustrated when certain events happen in ways that they don't expect could or should be possible. Or they can be frustrated with the type of RP that another player creates because it doesn't fit in the same theme they wish to play. Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?: Not that I'm aware of! School during the year for me is mostly during the morning, so I'll be available most evenings. I prefer nothing too execessively late though, since I mostly have 8AM classes. (EST) Thanks for the opportunity to play! Let me know if you have any questions.
Name : Andrew Age : 28 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? I'm really a fan of character development and interactions. I like diving into a role and playing in character, as it really gets me more connected to the game. Dungeon crawling and killing monsters is all well and good, but it's a lot more engaging to me when I care about characters involved. That's what got me into Critical Role in the first place, and by extension D&D as a whole. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?  The only thing I can think of that irks me when it comes to D&D is lots of off topic talk during game time. Once a session starts, I like to be engaged and really focus on what's happening. That and murder-hoboing. And too much metagaming. Okay, I guess that was more than one thing. Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed? I'm on the east coast, so it'll be later for me, but I work later in the morning so I get to sleep in if sessions go late. So the time shouldn't be an issue.
Name:Samuel or Sage Age: 20 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? ex: political intrigue, extensive character development, ethical dilemmas, etc Party banter, great plots, out of the box thinking and teamwork What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?: ex: table talk, min-maxing, slow plot, feeling rushed, etc. nothing i know of yet still kind of new Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?: Nope perfect time for me
Hi hi! Kind of a long shot because I'm not sure if you're still looking for someone but I'll throw my hat in! Name: symph! everyone calls me that so it makes things easy. Age: 23 What are some elements of a game that you enjoy the most? oh man! so things i super love? character development. especially in longer campaigns, I feel like getting the chance to really dig deep into your character over the course of the different arcs is just so fulfilling. and i think this ties into roleplaying and like the whole campaign setting too. i love it when backstory comes into play, when seemingly old interactions have far reaching consequences. I like the idea that our characters may be pretty badass adventurers but also are not immune to vulnerabilities so yes intrigue is definitely a part of it. on a more meta level, i just love maps. i enjoy seeing the setting so i can visualise the place y'know? i'm a bit Extra™ so i like making pinterest boards. the more descriptive, the more drawn in i feel towards the place, the better. i also love downtime? something my group and i do between each session in our current campaign is to write like a few paragraphs of a point during the session so we can really solidify our characters. i feel like if we can sustain our characters between session it makes for a stronger few hours when we do sit down to roll. What are some things that tend to frustrate or annoy you when it comes to playing?:  mmmm this is a bit hard because i've been so lucky to have only good experiences so far! i think railroading or--- player knowledge i guess? it really detracts from the story which i feel is super important. i also think as players we have to be considerate to each other. like we love our individual characters but we also have to let others shine and tell their story? it's a collective effort and i feel like player dynamics influence this a lot so although ive not had a bad experience yet, i think it's definitely a concern of mine going into any campaign.  Are there any scheduling issues you anticipate for the time/days listed?: not at all actually! so full disclosure, i'm nearer to australia than i am to the US so timezones are a bit wonky for me but the day and times listed works well!  anyway! hope to hear from you soon!
