Without using the API, the only thing I can think of is setting up the hp bar differently. You could use one bubble for the HP total (without inputting a min), and don't make it visible to the PCs. Then you could use a separate bubble for damage done, and make that bubble visible to the PCs. Then, when damage done = max hp - the monster is dead! Those settings, FYI, are found on the Advanced tab on the token settings window (visible when you double click on the token). In the case below, the players would be able see both the Name of the creature, and the number in Bar 2. You would also need to set up the basic settings to where Bar 1 has the creature's max HP (but nothing in the second square, so a bar isn't shown), and then the same for Bar 2, just editing the bubble for how much damage has been done (here the creature's max HP is 21, and it's taken 12 points of damage so far): Another option, if you don't need exact numbers, but want to give players a rough idea of how much a creature is damaged, is to place some kind of status marker on it to show when it's at half HP (or whatever figure you decide). In my game, I use a half-heart marker - but I also have an API script that manages that for me. Hope this helps! EDIT: Or you could just ask The Aaron, and he'll have a much more elegant solution. :/
