I am new and i am lost ...

So let me start by saying this place looks amazing and and my hat's of to the Roll20 creators and all those that populated this online tabletop with their own worlds and ideas. And also please forgive my grammar or any other writing mistakes that any who read this might encounter, as english is not my first or even second language (insert face of akwardness here). It actualy took some effort on my part to write this. So the purpose of this post is more or less a cry for help, for someone to point me to a starting position. My goal is to first learn how to be a player through this program before i even consider becoming a Gm. So far i found the information and eplanations given here prety overwhelming for my self, all these numbers, mechanics and terminologies kinda got me scared to just hop in game and figure it out as it goes because i will probably be ruining the game for the other players and Gm. I do have some experience a few years back when i played a campaign of DnD with some friends in the "oldschool way" of pen and paper and i loved it, circumstances like work mostly, drove me away from it or made it very difficult to bring together a group of people. Well this is it, this is the question, where do i start as a player and where can i find a game to lets say "get my feet wet" with this program? All tips would greatly appreciated.

English is my first language and I still manage grammar and every other writing mistake. I would start in the LFG section.... you can even look by language <a href="https://app.roll20.net/lfg/search" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/lfg/search</a> Or just start playing around with building some maps and tokens to get use to the Roll20 features.

Hello and welcome to the community. What edition of D&D are you familiar with or are you willing to learn newer editions? The quickest and easiest way to get your feet wet is to find a game and ask to join it. There are two ways to do this. 1: Look in the Looking for Group section here in the forums and post an interest in the thread that you are interested. The GM of that game will contact you and help you with getting a character made for his/her game if they choose you. 2: If you look up at the top of the page you will see in the blue banner "Looking for Group" and that will take you to a listing of all active games. You can search that listing with key filters such as game type, days, time, languages, etc... The more filters you use the more narrow your search will be. Just post your interest but do not forget to post your timezone, days you can play, your experience, and anything else that might help you gain the GM's attention.
Damian: If you have not already done so, you might search on YouTube for some recorded game sessions using Roll20. Seeing the application in action might help you as both a new player and a potential GM. There are also actual tutorial videos available there which can help as well.

There is also session recordings on twitchtv also.
Thank you all for replying so quickly! To Stephen S. : I would prefer to learn playing in english for personal reasons, as for your advice in trying to build some maps to get used to the various mechanics, i think its a very good idea and i will add it to my daily routine aside from trying to play maps from other creators. To Metroknight : 1. Its been a long time and my memory of it is hazy at best but i think it was between 1rst and 2nd edition. Personaly i would love to learn the newer editions and play with them. 2. I looked into the "Looking for Group" feature and there seem to be some very specific demands that i dont understand, not because of language barriers but because i wasnt familiar with the various editions that where a required read in order to participate in the given game. Therefore i got a litle intimidated. As for twichtv.. i dont know what that is but i am looking into it as i write this. Last but not least. To Brett E. : I did looked on Youtube for a sort of a lets play of some roll20 and so far i have only seen advance players running some games, or atleast they seemed advanced to me. But i will continue my search. Again thank you all for the quick replies which gave a boost in confidence to continue trying.

Never feel intimidated. We all have been where you are at so we know how you feel. What type of specific demands that you didn't understand? As for 1e and 2e, they are very similar in mechanics so they can be treated as interchangeable. There are some options. in 2e that 1e does not have but you can use them in either edition
I'll echo Metroknight, nothing to be intimidated about. It sounds like you're leaning towards D&D over other games and you mentioned you prefer a newer version, so that would be 3.5 or 4th. I personally am not familiar with those editions but it's what most people play these days. So, narrow down your YouTube and Twitch video searches for those specific edition games and watch them being played. I'm sure you'll learn a lot. If, on the other hand, you decide to stick with an older edition of D&D then there's a few of us around here who can help you with that. I'm currently running 1st edition, myself.
I run 2nd edition, but I've run literally everything in print unless it was very small print run. Most popular seem to be Pathfinder, 3.5 and 4th in that order, then non fantasy then 1e/2e, but those last two are die hard old school fans, and fill up pretty quick if offerred. Slots in those games are like really snapped up. Lots of others looking for PF, 3.5 4e, lots and lots new i think about 10 new guys this week, same as last week. Some with limited experience, some with none. the place is growing fast recently. If you ever want to be a DM, you will have no lack of players if your system is popular. Good luck.
