Rules Clarifications

There were some questions asked about Hope in this night's game, in particular how it is restored. To clarify:  - Hope does not refresh. Once you spend a Hope point, it's gone.  - However, your group has a number of Fellowship points equal to the number of members in the party (Hobbits are worth 2 Fellowship points). These can be used to restore Hope points on a 1-for-1 basis. To draw Fellowship points from the party pool, you need permission from at least half the group -- otherwise, you can take the points anyway but you gain 1 Shadow point for each Fellowship point you "steal."  - Fellowship points refresh at the start of each in-person game session. Unused Fellowship points do not carry over. Use them or lose them.  - You can also restore Hope by taking another member of the group as a Fellowship Focus -- this indicates a particularly close friendship, such Sam's devotion to protecting Frodo. If at the end of a game session your Fellowship Focus is in the same place as you and was not seriously harmed during the session (including being Wounded or Poisoned, becoming Miserable, or harmed in another way the Lore-master considers equivalent), you gain 1 Hope Point. However, if your Focus is Wounded, you gain 1 Shadow point at the end of the session for your failure to protect him/her. Having your Focus killed is worth 3 Shadow Points.  I've mentioned it before, but remember: the game assumes you will use plenty of Hope when you're a novice adventurer. Once you've gotten some experience under your belt and raised your skills, you won't be relying on Hope as much.
Might as well post a reminder on what you can do with traits and specialties:  - Automatically pass a test with an ordinary success. No Advancement Points awarded for this, but hey, you passed.  (Although the rules don't specify it, I would rule that you can only use a trait or specialty one time during an extended set of rolls. For instance, if you have the Hardy trait, you can automatically pass the Travel check for one leg of a journey, but not every single Travel check.)  - Request a roll if you think you deserve one (for instance, Horalia using her Shadow-lore to get a Lore check in the ruins).  - Invoke to gain Advancement Points beyond the first one.
