presents it as the skill.

has a type-able field, but no matter what  I type, it gives me the charisma output. Looking at Ability checks at the moment. What am I missing?

Unfortunately the reason you are running into errors with those macros is because of the HTML encoded values being overwritten by the forum text editor.To get them to work as intended you will need to replace each instance of }} with }} Also note that if you create these macros as global macros instead of character abilities, these HTML encoded values will be overwritten when the next time you open the macro (to see the code). It is highly recommended that you either create these macros as character abilities (this ensures the HTML will not be replaced) or store them (or make future changes) in an external text editor and copy them into the global macro as needed.
