Class Encounters of the Multi Kind

With the recent talk of this introductory campaign winding to a close fairly soon, and the possibility of rolling new characters instead of keeping our current ones, I thought I'd mention an alternative if you like your character but might be getting a little bored of your class.... MULTICLASSING! Don't run in terror, turns out multiclassing isn't the life-filled-with-regret mistake it use to be. Yes, it still diverts your focus, and means you'll hit your class's higher level cool-stuff later/not-at-all, but I was reading this guide , and he makes some great arguments. Now it's an optimizer's guide, but I certainly don't think any of us are at that level of crunch-artifice (also if we wanted to optimize our combat effectiveness we'd probably start with ourselves as players before we started worrying about whether we've maximized our characters' action economy potential or whatever :P) - we're a good group that seems more into who our characters are and the cool shit they can do than crafting perfect builds. It's still got some great advice though. If you don't want to read the guide, you don't have to! I did, and I'm here to vomit unsolicited advice at you all! :P Garad Fighter/Rogue (Mobility) Since he's more of a thug than a soldier, and has a criminal background, picking up a couple of rogue levels might make sense. I'd probably just take two to get to Cunning Action, but you could reach further if you don't mind delaying your higher level fightery stuff. 1 level: Expertise in Athletics would help with those sweet wrestling moves (you also get sneak attack, but it only works with finesse weapons, so meh) 2 levels: Cunning Action - dash or disengage as a bonus action? What's not to like! 3 levels: If you take the Assassin archetype you get to use poison, for what that's worth. Also auto-crits against surprised enemies is pretty good, though probably not gonna come up often with our party XD 4-5 levels: Probably only take 4th to get 5th, as fighters get plenty of ability score improvements, but Uncanny Dodge is legit - use your reaction to half any one attack's damage. Fighter/Barbarian (Melee Tankiness) This is gonna sound a little racist, but he is half orc :P Also it seems totally in character for Garad to get a little ragey. The biggest drawback here is that it doesn't work if you want to wear Heavy Armor, so you'd have to be OK with trading AC for damage and damage resistance. I'd suggest only 3 levels. 1 level: Can't go wrong with Rage - bonus damage, advantage on those Athletics checks to grab ppl, and resistance to bludgeoning/piercing/slashing. 2 levels: Reckless Attack is perfect for a melee tank - you can have advantage on pretty much every attack at the "cost" of others having advantage when attacking you (not really a cost if you're the tank, it's a great way to draw fire - and if you're raging you're probably taking half damage anyway) 3 levels: Frenzy from Path of the Berserker means you can make attacks as a bonus action while raging. 4-5: You can take 4th for an ability score improvement, and 5th for extra attacks, but these are things fighters get a lot of anyway. Recto Monk/Cleric I notice the Order of the Sun Soul is religious, so Cleric might not be totally weird for Recto to dip into. Even just one level gets you access to a bunch of spells, and can totally jive with your flavor - e.g. Guiding Bolt seems like it could be skinned as a supercharged version of the the sun-punchy-fist thing you already do. And remember that clerics have access to their entire spell list, and can mix up their picks every long rest, so it'd give you a lot of utility (just don't think it means you have to take healing spells, we already have people for that). You also get a domain ability, which aren't anything to sneeze at. e.g. the Light Domain might be a good pick (assuming Recto worships the traditional deity of the Sun Soul, Amaunator - yeah that's right, I googled it :P), and Warding Flare is a great reaction, imposing disadvantage on attackers can save your monky-butt. Monk/Rogue Recto wears pirate boots, so he was totally a pirate in his background right? Kelpie's Kiss is a great name for a pirate ship. In my head-canon Recto is totally a former pirate, is what I'm saying XD Though even as a mere seaman, Recto might have hung out with some unsavory types and picked up a few tricks. Grabbing two levels of rogue wouldn't be the worst. You'd have to use a finesse weapon to benefit from Sneak Attack, but it's Cunning Action you really want - Recto would be ridiculously mobile (and could run away much more effectively!) being able to dash/disengage/hide as a bonus action. Having said that it uses up your bonus action which you could otherwise use for a flurry. Rolen Don't do it. Druids are great. Get those higher level spells as soon as you can XD Steve Warlock/Sorcerer This would take Steve in a slightly different direction, but if you wanted to play it that (due to Granny's encouragement, obviously) Steve finally starts to develop some latent magical potential within himself. Then your decision each level to take a level in Warlock or a level in Sorcerer reflects an in-character decision that Steve has to make, to take the quick and dirty path by accepting more power from Cthulu or whatever, or to instead (listen to Granny and) feel more confident in himself :P The best thing about Sorcerer as we all know is metamagic, which admittedly you don't get till level 3, making this a bit of an investment. But who wouldn't want to throw around two eldritch blasts per turn? Admittedly you'd burn through sorcery points pretty quickly, but you can liquidate spell slots to get more (why would you cast a spell that isn't eldritch blast anyway? :P). (Also if you do this, please please please pretty please take the Wild Magic sorcerous origin XD) Zig As with Rolen, I'd suggest staying the course with Zig. You want to get those higher level spells because they'll just WRECK everything. Having said that there is one option I thought of... :P Wizard/Cleric I noticed in Zig's bio that he seems pretty dedicated to the God of Knowledge god, so it might not be amiss for him to be granted some extra power from his deity to help in his pursuit of knowledge for the betterment of all humanoidkind. Benefits : medium armor proficiency a ludicrously sized pool of spells from which to prepare from each day cleric domain power (I'd probably suggest Knowledge, but you might be able to justify others) you could use the scrolls of Revivify and Silence :3 (this is actually how this whole thing started, I was all "Hmm... actually there IS a way this could work!" Drawbacks Don't get to those high level wizard spells as quickly (won't get level 9 wizard spells at all if you take more than 3 non-Wizard levels, in fact). Would have to spend one of your ability score improvements to boost Wis to 13 Like I said, probably not worth it, even for just a single level. Granny As for myself I'm seriously considering splashing either sorcerer (Granny's paladin abilities already come more from her own inner strength than any deity, so a little innate magic shouldn't come as a surprise) or bard (she's got a lot of tales to tell, some of them might even be inspiring).
Great work Granny, some pretty fun ideas here and you have me rethinking Recto entirely. Are we allowing Multiclassing?
I'm okay with multiclassing, as long as you justify it for your character...
Just a heads up I am strongly considering the path suggested above for Steve. I think it jives nicely with his being a warlock against his will.

> Are we allowing Multiclassing? Uh oh... Was there something mentioned before I joined on discouraging multiclassing? Sorry if that's the case, I wouldn't have poked that bear had I known XD > I'm okay with multiclassing, as long as you justify it for your character Absolutely, it's gotta make sense - I tried to lead each example with at least an attempt at justifying it, but y'all know your characters better than I do. (Recto's already established his background as a pirate, so he's good to go! :3) There's a great OOTS comic about the bard considering multiclassing into wizard, even though he's never studied magic: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0126.html
