I have had a game going for 2 years and all of a sudden half my characters just show the generic purple icon.  What gives?

Maybe you were using web images for their avatars?  It seems that more and more images culled from web searches (i.e. not part of your library) are disappearing.  Could that be the issue?

The alternative is if you have removed images from the 'recently added' section of your art library. This will delete the base image and cause anything using that image to 'break'.
