Generic vs. Unique Tokens. What's your preference?

If you're looking for some tokens to buy to fill your map with NPCs, would you prefer them to have identifiable faces, or instead have their faces be obscured? Would you want your townspeople looking unique or as generic as possible? I ask because I'm working on a token pack right now and so far all my characters have faces, which I fear would make it difficult to fill a map with various NPCs or use them for multiple different purposes. I'm considering adding versions of the tokens with helmets, masks, etc. to remedy this, and want to knowif that's a good idea going forward. What's your opinion?

Everyone wearing the same helmet isn't going to help diversity the townspeople. However it works nicely for guards, troops, where you might want to put a line of 6 or 8 or 12 of the "same" helmet.  I would suggest provide as many different faces as you can make for the token pack, and include a few masked and helmed that can be used for repeaters. As for my personal campaign, I keep both a set of generics (they are just circles with things like a Star, a circle, a bolt, or a letter symbol), and also use unique faces for people who have more to say, or who might play more of a role in the towny gameplay.
You could use the same face, but add different kinds of facial hair. People tend to look very different with beards and other gentlemanly grooms, its great to do this as its quick, easy and takes little to no work.

Hair color, skin tone, hats, hair style, are all ways of varying appearance without too much re-drawing. Are you talking about portrait style pogs, or top down minis? Facial variation is probably far more important in the former and easier to repurpose in the latter.
