how does this work?

So I get that roll20 is a virtual board and all, but how does it work exactly? What can I do with it? I am trying to make my own RPG with a friend, just for fun and all, so mechanics wise it is unique. Will the program record health and other status that are used in our game? I really am not sure what I should ask here as I am new to the RPG world (parent's wont lemme play D&D, so that's why were making our own, as he does play that kinda stuff). Anything I should know about Roll20 would be greatly appricated ^_^
Pretty much all of your questions are answered in the video on the front page.

If you're parents won't let you play D&D, but you still want a d20 fantasy based RPG, Check out Pathfinder. Anywho, as Chris said, just check out the video on the front page and the check the help page Here .

Matt has a point. Pathfinder is a variation on D&D 3.5 but has the advantage that you do not ever have to buy it. You can find the rules on the free PRD on the publishers website or on the d20pfsrd (see links below). http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/ http://www.d20pfsrd.com/ - Gauss
Just out of curiosity why won't your parent want you playing D&D specifically? I'm assuming you are allowed to roleplay if you use other mechanics/worlds.

Hi Rykuu, Welcome to Roll20. A GameMaster (GM) can create a Campaign on Roll20's website and invite other players to join it. If everyone has a microphone and webcam then it allows players to voice/video chat in real time. Or you can use the chat window to type your messages. The site and service are system agnostic, which means it attempts to support any and all table top RPG systems that are out there, including custom ones you make yourself. The intent behind the interface is to support Roleplaying gatherings by allowing the GM to create maps (ahead of time) on which little character tokens for the players and opponents can be moved around. The GM assigns which token/s can be controlled by which player/s. Tokens can have stats. There is also a journal tab with a character sheet button that allows players to fill out character sheets. And of course there are mechanics for rolling dice via the interface so that everyone can see the dice roll. As others have mentioned most of this info and how to use these features are available through the videos on the front page, and the help section of the website. http://help.roll20.net/ If you have any specific questions regarding things not covered by the videos or help section please feel free to ask.
My group and I play DnD 3.5 but If you'd like to pop in and see how we use the system your welcome to do so. just send me a PM
