Mic/Cam is essential to GM(Or even play, depending on the group) in the roll20 community, isn't it? Seems like there's a lot more folks looking for GMs than players for these systems. I'd be game, but can't get sound working -.-
Neither the Mic or Cam are required for any game. While a mic does make things easier as you save time over typing it is not required. Same goes for a cam. You can find text only games fairly easily.
Mic/Cam works fine if everyone is speaking the same language fluently without much of an accent. Given I'm generally in Euro timezones, I personally prefer text. Not everyone I play with is a Brit, after all, or can understand my own horrible mess of an English accent ;)
I've never met anyone who insisted on a webcam, but there have been plenty of people that insisted on mikes. You can probably find text based games as well, but just going by my experience, there are a *lot* more voice based games than text based. That said, if you DM, you make the rules. If you are hosting a text based game as a DM, rather than looking for one to join as a player you'll have no problem finding people I'm sure.
Cool! Thanks guys. I wasn't really sure what the social expectations are on Roll20. .... Just diagnosed the problem. I had assumed it was something related to my operating system/browser/drivers/etc... The mic had actually burned out. I still prefer typing over voice, often.
