More progress = More dragons
Book Two, Chapter 2.1 (session 39, 25 th
January 2018)
You found a new ally, vouched
for by the Lords Alliance to replace the lost Carharvilios. Augustus Weatherby,
an impressive Half-Orc Warrior.
You depart Waterdeep on the 11 th
Alturiak 1485 on horseback, arriving at Daggerford on the 15 th and
entering the Misty Forest and arriving in Altand midday on the 17 th .
You talked to many of the
villagers who reported that of the three hundred
residents of the village, more than half survived the raid—a different outcome
than at other raided settlements, where the dragon hunted and killed the elves
to the last adult and child. Many of the residents of Altand were on the ground
when the attack came. Of the elves in the upper level of the village, many died
of the dragon’s poisonous breath while waiting to descend, or fell to their
deaths as bridges and walkways collapsed under the weight of panic. Most
survivors fled and saw little of what ensued but by asking questions you learnt
that the dragon swooped down and attacked on the ground first. Nearly
half of the village’s victims died during that first assault; humans in strange
outlandish garb (the regalia of the Cult of the Dragon) followed the dragon,
killing all those they found. The village’s priest, Varpol stepped out to lead
others in fighting the dragon, but the beast swallowed him whole. Some
survivors claimed to have seen a cultist riding atop the dragon. Most of those
refer to the dragon rider as human, however, a few people report that the
figure moved with the grace of an elf. With their priest dead, the village’s
warden, Galin, has become the leader of Altand. Though he was in the thick of
the fight, he survived unscathed, and has been a potent force for rallying the
survivors despite losing his wife and children in the attack. The entire attack
lasted only a short while, then the dragon unexpectedly retreated, its minions
followed, but as they fled, they took nothing of value from the village. This
is a stark contrast to the dragon’s other raids, which were focused on
capturing treasure.
You interviewed Galin and
were not convinced by his account, sure that he was withholding information. As
dusk drew in Franz scouted the area and found a strange area half a mile
outside of the village that looked as if a large beast had rested there, a
faint trail headed back to the village. Naergon set an alarm on the spot and
prepared to cast clairaudience if the alarm sounded. Jamna skulked in the
outskirts and watched the trail. Jamna spotted Galin, head off down the track
later that night and sometime later Naergon’s alarm sounded. Casting
clairaudience to get a view of the glade, Naergon spied a tall elf dressed as a
wyrmspeaker and wearing a green dragon mask, standing in front of a very
dangerous looking green dragon. He was talking to Galin, who looked very
humbled and scared, bowing and scraping. Switching to sound, Naergon heard just
enough to be sure that Galin was giving information to this green masked elf,
information on other settlements and the movement of the King’s Sentinels.
The next morning you again
interviewed Galin, this time presenting overwhelming evidence of his betrayal.
At first he denied things but eventually broke down, sobbing as he described
the death of his family and finding himself at the mercy of this elf on the
battlefield. He made a deal, a deal to protect his village, he knows its wrong
and is deeply ashamed but he was/is desperate and desolate. You assure you that
you will take care of this and that his betrayal is understandable but now he
must step up and make good. Despite his sad tale, Jamna kills his pet raven,
the only member of his family left to him.
You spend the next day
plotting and planning, how to bring down the dragon. Deciding that hunting it in
its lair is a bad idea you decide that you should attempt to lure it into the
open outside the forest (because of the damn mist). To this end you plan to lay
on a fake caravan and use Galin to feed the information to the dragon master.
