So you baited a
dragon in its lair . . . Book Two,
Chapter 2.1 (session 42, 8 th March 2018)
Having left Tolan
to deal with delivering the dead body of Neronvain to the King, you set off for
Altand for some rest, a chat with Galin and to formulate a plan to winkle the
dragon out of its lair. On the way several members of the team found the time to
mutter quiet messages into their assorted necklaces, bangles and brooches –
Augustus raised an astute eyebrow but opted for supercilious aloofness.
On arrival at
Altand, you discussed things with Galin, who was initially overjoyed to hear of
the successful outcome to your plan. This soon faded when you admitted that the
dragon was still alive and on the loose and then mentioned that the dragonrider
was the king’s (dead) estranged son. Galin demanded that you complete the job
and kill the dragon – an uncontrolled, vicious monster would be far less
discriminating than Neronvain had been and negotiation would be of no use. It
has to die, now! You agreed that this was your intent.
Franz then
informed Galin that he would be accompanying you back to Waterdeep to explain
to the Council his actions in colluding with the Cult and face punishment.
Galin paled and refused – this was not the deal. Franz remained adamant.
Eventually Franz was persuaded to leave things be until after the dragon had
been dealt with.
It was then
decided that Franz should make use of the Green Dragon Mask and everyone
settled in for a well-earned rest. The following morning you headed deep into
the forest and into the Dead Zone, pushing through ever-deeper briars and
thickets, thorns and foliage that seemed to actively work against you until
finally you arrived at the waterfall in the full knowledge that the local
wildlife will in all likelihood have informed the dragon of your approach.
On arrival you
found a small rocky ledge wound p to behind the waterfall. Jamna thought she
could see a shifting shadow in the darkness beyond. As you started up the
slope, the green dragon swooped out from behind the curtain of water and
breathed poison. A vicious fight ensued that saw Mads fall only to be dragged
away by Bigby’s hand and revived. The dragon slipped back into its hole and
other figures could be seen vaguely behind the waterfall, chanting softly.
Seconds later the dragon again emerged, breathing poison and roaring. Franz
used his staff and Naergon sealed the entrance with a conjured wall. The dragon
soared high and roared again.
And that’s where
we left it
