Hmmm, GIFs are poorly optimised (ie none), what about support for short/small mp4 files? Perhaps even roll20 could convert an uploaded GIF to mp4 on the fly? https://rigor.com/blog/2015/12/optimizing-animated... I imagine a looped animation of a small character token or a background wouldnt be too large in file size.

I'm an animator and a DM. I'd love to be able to make my own little gifs of tokens. Gifs have transparency and operate in a similar way to PNGs, so I wonder if this would be possible all the time! I'd love to make some animated tokens for the Marketplace too.

Gifs technically have transparency, but it's it's a 1-bit alpha channel. I don't think they'd be good for any kind of smooth implementation.

What you would want in this case are .webm's -- they're optimized, flexible, and have a fully functioning alpha channel. And yes, there are plenty of methods for being able to upload a GIF or other video file and running an automated conversion process. I think this would be a really great feature to have, but I'm sure there would be a lot of wrinkles regarding execution and accounting for every use case.
