It'd be convenient if we could crop art pieces, and, possibly moreso, their bounding boxes. A one-tile-long wall doesn't deserve a three-tile-long selection box.

I agree, I found a bunch of tile art that is great, but it is the center of a large white box, or hexagon.

I fixed this problem in the case of photos of poker chips by using a graphics editing program called GraphicConverter. You can select the part you want and then either use the "trim selection" command or the "new image from selection" command.
