Lots of ways to start... here's one of them. First, look for Podcasts and Videos of actual-play games, as well as DM / Player advice shows. Watch a bunch, find a few you like, watch those even more. Then, decide which system(s) you want to play. D&D 5e is very popular these days, and the basic rules are available online. 'Read' the rules, by which I mean poke around at things that look interesting and study those, then go back and figure out how it all works. Search the LFG forums here on Roll20, and others I cannot mention. People will post here when they are starting games, looking for players, or looking for a game to play in. Come up with a polite posting, and try it yourself. Get rejected, ignored, and disappointed a lot when you don't get into a game. There are MANY more players than GMs. Finally get accepted into a game. Do happy dance. Talk with the GM and other players about your character ideas. Actually play. Have fun (hopefully)
