Dungeons are puddles of darkness, this is the sea. (Click above & read on) THE ENDLESS DESCENT
At the deepest point of the dungeon, behind the throne, beyond the rooms
where the battles took place, after everything is done and the enemy
dead, there is a crack. A black empty space where the wall joins the
stone floor, a foot and a half high and three wide. A breeze comes out.
You’d never notice it. You could lie on your belly and fit inside. IT NEVER ENDS
You have existed, up to this point, on the illusion of a plane, bordered
by mountains, rivers, seas or the politics of maps, and this life has
been a lie. Its borders are made up, its seas are gateways, its
mountains are cradles of deep life. There is no plane.
You were raised within a history running back through recorded time,
written in ink, carved in stone, scooped from clay, hidden in songs.
Your primal myths are an eye-blink of the memory of that place. Your
history is a candle burning out.
The real world, the deeper, more true world, is bordered only by light above and fire below, and perhaps not even by that.
When you loathe gold for its weight and count your wealth by a radius of
illuminated rock and think yourself lucky to do so, then you have
passed into the VEINS OF THE EARTH . ~ Hello, my name is Chris / turbonerd, and I am bringing you a 216 grid hex crawl combining the fantastic Lamentations of the Flame Princess supplements, Fire on the Velvet Horizon and Veins of the Earth . When is this game? How much is it? How many players do you need? This game will be played weekly , Tuesdays @ 5:00-9:00PM CST-US .
I originally had thought to charge people to play this game as a lot of
work and care has gone into it and will be going into the running of
it, but as some point my enthusiasm gets the best of me. I only run
games that I myself would want to play in, and so here we are. I require
4 players. A fifth would be considered for the right player and right
group. What is Lamentations of the Flame Princess? LotFP is
a retro-clone of the B/X D&D rule set written by James Raggi. It is
Weird Fantasy, which suggests that going off into grisly death traps to
fight creatures that terrorize man is actually rather horrifying
instead of a heroic power trip. If you have ever played D&D, then
this will be up familiar to you. It is swords & sorcery, but more
Lovecraft than Tolkien. Note that the game by it's nature can be graphic and have adult situations. This is not a pornography game. This is not a game of fetishized violence. This is not a game of prejudice. I mean adult, not puerile. If you never played before or don't
own the books - that's fine. The full and free (art-less) version of the
PHB is available here, legally, in PDF form: ( https://paulgorman.org/roleplaying/dnd/misc/LotFP_Rules_and_Magic_Free_Version_without_Art.pdf ) What is Veins of the Earth & Velvet on the Fire Horizon?
These are supplemental books that are actually quite system neutral.
They are both written by Patrick Stuart and illustrated by Scrap
Princess. Fire is a delirious monster manual full of mind-bending critters that you could base an entire campaign around. Veins is
setting sourcebook that is like a twisted fever dream of the Underdark
complete with it's own macabre versions of Drow, Duergar, etc. It's a
place where adventurers trade priceless relics for a bit of moldy bread,
encounters are described more in smell and sound than sight, and it's
denizens' alien motivations and physiology will leave you disarmed and
wondering. The evocative descriptions of Stuart will stick with you, and
the primal, frantic art of Scrap looks like something drawn mid-battle
by a terrified hand.Veins won two Ennie awards ( https://www.geeknative.com/60112/ennies-2017-winners/ ). Silver for Best Monster/Adversary, Silver for Best Writing. Nominated for Product of the Year. They're dead, and often wrapped in ropes that broke their neck. Will you be using any other books? House rules?! Yes. We will be using features of the Playtest Document of LotFP
which include a few fundamental changes to the options presented in the
book, but nothing you can't get over - we will, after all, be making
characters together. We will also be using Wonder & Wickedness ,
an OSR spellbook that introduces many, many new spells to the game.
There are other rules to be discussed upon character generation. What is your DM style and experience?
I am generally not what you would call an adversarial DM. If you have
ever seen Critical Role, know that Mercer is a high watermark for me,
and I frequently incorporate personal touches and quests and focus on
backstories and the agendas of PCs. I am no voice actor, but I will be
doing bad voices with gusto. I frequently incorporate Matt Colville's tricks, watch webDM, Dawnforgedcast, listen to podcasts. I will be preparing x4 as much for this game as you will be playing it. I have 15+ years experience as a DM. I very
carefully curate and dynamically change music for mood in the game, and
I pick mood-evoking tracks and pay attention. I will be sharing Scrap
Princess art where appropriate in this game. I will be reading passages
Stuart has written to make your mind churn with possibility. What can I expect out of this game?
This game will be difficult. Combats will be difficult. Characters will
be fragile. The way the game is designed is basically survival horror -
there are very elegant systems for tracking light/oil resources left,
encumbrance, food, and more. There are rules for being lost in the dark,
moving to hexes where there is no clear path, cannibalism, advanced
climbing checks. Your wits will be tested with social encounters with
inscrutable alien civilizations, multiple factions, and exploration.
I mentioned I have a 216 hex map. Every hex has a point of interest,
encounter, treasure, dungeon, creature, or event on it. Every one. They
mingle with factions. You will build your own story based on your
adventures here. Think of this as the planet, with the red there the
magma core in the center where demons build their infernal cities. Not
every hex is the same amount of miles - everything is non-euclidean in
nature. One hex could be 300 miles, and another 4. This is the best map
that could be provided of a completely incomprehensible, unmappable
place. Illimitable ocean without bound, Without dimension; where length and breadth, and height And time and place are lost ; where eldest Night And Chaos ancestors of Nature, hold Eternal anarchy, amidst the noise of endless wars, and by confusion stand. Strong hearts, post here with your name and experience. Send me a message with your discord name. Good luck. https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/122090/veins-of-the-earth
