Player angry with really low rolls

Sorry if this isn't the correct forum to post this in, I wasn't sure which this kind of post would fit in. So, I'm not actually sure how much can be done with this, but I needed to figure out if there was anything. So, I DM a campaign of eight players, and I only know them exclusively through Roll20. Everyone's enjoying the game, except for one. For months she has consistently rolled lower than 10 on almost every roll, every session. The largest variation she's had is making four rolls that were above 10. Her stats aren't amazing, and everyone else has a good balance of good and bad rolls, except for her, and we have no idea why. It's gotten to the point where she gets frustrates anytime I ask her to make a roll, because most of the time, she knows she's going to fail (as she has). So, is there anything that can be done to fix this, aside from giving her special treatment (like free rerolls or something similar)?

Two great statements from The Aaron and Drespar respectively: The QuantumRoll page of the Roll20 Wiki is definitely worth checking out. QuantumRoll is actually more random than physical dice . Further discussion and readings on this topic: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/63487/from-the-source-roll20-rng-testing https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/4517173/skewed-dice/?pageforid=4517352#post-4517352 http://cocosci.berkeley.edu/tom/papers/hard.pdf This really has been talked to death. Consider that for the 10-20 posts in the last 5 years where people have suggested that the dice engine is not random, there are hundreds of thousands of games with players that didn't post with that suggestion. Read through those links above. If that doesn't convince you, then switch to physical dice. However, remember that the Gambler's Fallacy, also called the Monte Carlo fallacy, got its second name from a physical world event where the roulette wheel came up black 26 times in a row, a probability around around 1 in 136.8million. You can't escape Gambler's Fallacy. We actively track the randomness of every roll on Roll20, you can check out the stats of rolling a d20 at where Aaron has already linked: https://app.roll20.net/home/quantum To reiterate, we do keep a close eye on the status of the QuantumRoll system and you can track if perhaps it went down for a brief moment (it hasn't) here: http://status.roll20.net/ If at any point it does go down, you will not longer see the QuantumRoll symbol showing in your rolls when you hover over them. Unfortunately, this requires the restatement of things already discussed at length in this thread. We have collected years of data that support the graph that you see at the QuantumRoll status page and the claim that it is extremely random. However, if it is believed that the dice roller truly is not random, then we encourage that you perform tests and present your results to us directly at Team@Roll20.net so we can better investigate.

I've been DMing a game for the past 3.5 years and am convinced my rolls are cursed... since the roll engine can't be the cause it has to be bad juju and nothing else, if she wants to purge her soul tell her to do the following: /talktomyself then [[ 999d20 ]] then hover and look at the results, if there is nothing above a 10 there then ok, she has a case... although repeating that a few hundred times to get a good range of results wouldn't hurt. then /talktomyself

You could also look at her sheet and verify that her roll expressions are correctly formatted.

Perhaps there's a modifier that's clicked by accident?

I've seen cases where something was mistyped somewhere on a sheet and it prevented the calculation from evaluating correctly. In one case on the OGL sheet, it was possible to end up with the "roll" only ever being the modifiers without the die, which created artificially low "rolls" until we found what was broken. I'm afraid I don't remember the specifics, but it should be obvious that it's happening by looking at the expanded roll in the hover tooltip.
Yep, most likely the case Aaron has laid out or something similar. I don't buy that she's "cursed" or whatever. It's obviously more of a mechanical issue than anything "supernatural". ;-) Might be worth blowing her sheet away, or make a copy, and then recreate it from scratch. See if the problem persists with the new iteration of the sheet. That is, unless you happen to find the issue in the original.

Yeah, I wasn't suggesting malicious misuse, just the possibility of an accidentally malformed roll expression. The cautionary tale of Will Wheaton shows that someone has to be on the ends of the probability curve. Confirmation bias can also tend to exaggerate the experience of recurring bad rolls. Doing some mass roll testing as above should clear up any impression of actual bias. Examining the sheet should eliminate any possibility of artificially constrained roll results. This only leaves actual unfortunate rolling. In which case, she can only wait and hope for better rolls like the rest of us.

Yeah, IIRC our case involved having a blank attribute when it expected a number and we fixed it by putting 0 in.

I wouldn't assume that her sheet is perfect. Just verify everything with her. She might have things missing in her attacks. If all else fails, she can always go back to sacrificing a chicken to the computer gods and if that fails, and I suggest this only as a last resort, she says before her dice roll, "I hate those f&cking rabbits" This also works when campfire smoke is always seemingly blowing in your face no matter where you sit. Please excuse the language of this mantra. I'm simply repeating it as it was taught me. Don't pass it on unless absolutely necessary. :)

There's also Critical Role's "don f--- me, Gil!" Which works about as often as you'd expect it too. In any case, your player has the deepest sympathy from everyone here, I am sure, as we have all been in her position at one time or another. It's depressing.
Haha, thank you all. I appreciate all the advice. Hopefully they'll calm her nerves, I doubt she'd enjoy becoming a Wil Wheaton. Ill be speaking to her as soon as she is available. Again, thank you.

If you are playing 5e, find excuses to give the player Inspiration. I got this idea from the great DM theorist Sly Flourish. It’s a game meant to be fun for the player ... so bend the rules a little. EDIT: More ideas at http://slyflourish.com/boosts_for_poor_luck.html
