Find out
what Fate has in store for you with the Deck of 101 Prophecies.
How does it
work?
PC's
can receive prophecies by visiting a fortune teller, praying to their God or
any other means the DM allows. The player draws one random card from the deck
and takes that card into their hand.
Once
received, it is the player's job to make the prophecy relevant to their character
and the story. If the player manages to do so, the DM can give the character a
bonus. If a player
attempts to use the prophecy in a way that clearly doesn't fit the story or is
clearly unwise, you can choose a negative outcome. For instance:
"Mark is playing a young half-elf named Elharil.
He receives a prophecy that says: 'In the eye of the storm, it's best to stay centered'.
Mark decides that this prophecy is a great metaphor for the mistrust between
humans and elves. During the next gaming sessions he plays out how he is
internally conflicted about his double heritage. And the DM, seeing this,
decides to put him on the spot by making his choose between elves and humans.
Can Elharil find a way to stay at the centre of that storm? If so, his
character will achieve personal growth. If not, he might take a darker more
radical path."
What I like
about this deck is that the player is responsible for fitting the prophecy into
the story. It automatically gets players thinking about character development.
And whatever they come up with will fit the way they see their characters.
Also, you
can create your own cards; even with images instead of words. And there are lots of
tips on using prophecies in different ways.
