Custom map tiles drag from the library at the wrong size.

Hey all,
Apologies if this has been posted before, I did a few searches but all I could find was older (1 year+) posts which leads me to believe that there might be a resolution that I just can't seem to find.

I'm trying to create a set of custom hex (H) tiles for building a world map and I've run up against an issue. The tile I've been working on has a radius of 3 (not counting the centre hex) and I've sized it correctly based on the image sizes detailed in the Roll20 Image Best Practice page.

When I drag the final tile from my desktop to the tabletop, it uploads and drops onto the tabletop at exactly the correct size and fits perfectly to the tiles as I would hope. The problem is when I drag another copy from my library to the table top (even when using the ALT key) it's the wrong size. Instead of being 7 tiles high, it places 3 tiles high. This is kind of a pain because the only way to resize it to the right fit is to do so without snapping and eyeball it which isn't as quick or as neat as I would like.

I've tried dragging it to every available layer both using ALT and not and the results are the same (though when not using alt on some layers it scales to fit in 1 hex). The only way to place it again at the right size is to drag the original from my desktop again and upload again, which is also not as quick as I would like and clutters up my library.

If anyone could offer a solution, or even any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all,

Regards,

Xero

Anyone at all? This can't be intended functionality surely?

This is a known issue; I asked a Dev to drop by and give a good explanation of why this happens, but as it is a weekend...all I can tell you is that it is a known issue, and you can right-click and choose to set the dimensions manually.

Hi Xero,

This is indeed intended functionality. Roll20 stores 4 different versions of a picture once it is uploaded: Original, Max, Med, and Thumb. Holding down Alt will drop the unsnapped medium version of the image on to the tablet top. As you increase or decrease the size of the picture we will swap out the image for the larger or smaller version.

So the next question is why? A large amount of images are huge at their original sizes and since everyone in the game has to load every image, it is a way to help cut down on one of the largest bandwidth costs and keep things running smoothly.

Is there a workaround?  I've seen square tiles that can be pulled from the library to the map layer and they're 2x2 or 3x3, so on and so forth.  Is there a way to do that with hex tiles so they naturally pull in, say, 3 hexes long?

Oh, well. That's disappointing.
But in the big picture it's just one more thing I'll have to work around when making maps.

Thanks for the reply
