Set Custom Unit/Grid Size By Pixels Instead Of Mutlipliers

So I've been using roll20 for a few years now and one thing that continues to bug me is how difficult it is to set the grid to a specific size in pixels.

I've long since learnt that if I want to make something for roll20 I need to make it a multiple of 7, but most everything not made specifically for roll20 will work in multiples of 5 or 2, so you end up with things that have a 50px or 64px grid. Making roll20 match those dimensions....

0.913285614?? I can't remember that number! I'm using roll20 because I'm bad at maths, it just feels unnecessarily difficult to me to set the grid to a specific size when there could instead be a text field where I just put in what size I want the grid to be in pixels.

It's even worse when it comes to getting the ruler to work with the new grid size because the ruler works based on the unit size (70 pixels) and not the size of the grid (64 pixels in this example). Putting in "1.64242158" just so that the ruler will read 1.5m for each square is not very user friendly

Obviously I know how to do it now, but I don't feel like I should have to have googled what calculation I needed to do to get the grid to be what size I want it to be.

I feel you are making things very hard on yourself without need. Why are you attempting to match the pixels of the map so precisely? Roll20 (and virtually all graphic manipulators) serve up graphics to match the viewed resolution. In Roll20's case, it actually makes tiles (this process is invisible to the end user) to serve more quickly at different sizes.

Let's say (for ease of math), you have a "perfect" graphic: 10 x 10 units and the overall size is 700px x 700px. If your map turns out to be 715 px x 715 px, there is no need whatsoever to change your units to 1.02142857143. Make your page 10 x 10 units and snap the map to size. Done.

Since this is based on a mistaken impression of how graphics are handled on Roll20, I have moved this over to the Specific Use Questions forum to save you a vote.

Because I am using pixel art graphics, if I want to retain the image quality I can't scale the image up or down unless its x2 or x3 ect, so I have to match the grid to the tileset.

As I said, I have learnt to work in multiples of 7 if I'm making graphics for roll20, but lets say for example I want to use a tileset like a cute dungeon by buch on open game art


These tiles are 16x16 and 32x32, the standard sizes for any pixel art tiles. upscaling to retain image quality is either going to put me at 64px or it's going to put me at 96px, either way if I squash it to 70px it will be blurry.


I don't see why wanting an easy way to change the size of the grid and maintaining image quality is unreasonable. I understand that roll20 divides images up into chunks, but if I am already able to change the size of the grid I don't understand why I can't put in a target size and have the maths be calculated in the background, for example.

What you want is not an unreasonable request.

What you need to understand is that sometimes stuff starts off in Suggestions which doesn't belong there because there's already ways to do what is wanted and so it gets moved from Suggestions (to refund you your vote, votes are precious and hard-earned for non-subscribers) to where you can get more feedback on how to do what you want.

Now that there is more information available on what it is you wish to do and why, your thread is back in Suggestions & Ideas.

Oh I see - I was under the impression that only creating the thread cost a vote though & that anyone can reply to an already posted suggestion? I understand that votes are limited and all, but at least on the forums I moderate I would ask for clarification and letting the OP respond before moving it, as it comes off very dismissive.

But if I'm wrong in how the votes stuff works then my bad!
