RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha

My players have noticed that the 3d dice function seems to trigger the rolling of more 3d dice than should be the case? E.g. on rolling to attack with sword - instead of 2 x d10, 1x d8 and 1 x d4, and 1 x d20, there may be 4 x d4 and 4 x d8 on screen - plus the numbers reported in the chat, can't always be tracked back to the 3d dice? So the dice my indicate success but the chat results indicate failure... Is this a bug with teh sheet, roll20 or do i have my game settings wires crossed somehow? Thanks in advance

The other dice are the damage rolls for special and critical damage.

Because the dice engine has no way of knowing before a roll is completed whether or not critical damage needs to be applied, it must roll all possible dice. For most sheets, only the relevant damage is reported in chat, but all dice must still be rolled. 3d Dice are like an add-on to the dice rolling mechanic. They represent the dice that have been rolled, reported or not. Therefor, depending on the system, you will almost always see a larger number of 3d dice than are reported in chat. When in doubt, use Chat as the official roll.
Aha - thanks for that - we only switched to RQG sheets from RQ3 sheets pretty recently and the latter showed only the dice reported in the chat, hence our  confusion. Thanks again

Thanks again The RQ3 sheet only rolls normal damage forcing  separate manually setup dice rolls for critical or special damage.
