In which
our heroes execute a plan Book Two, Chapter 3.1 (session 64, 30 th October
2018) The Party: Naergon Harna, elven wizard (diviner); Mads
Rangle, human fighter/warlock; Jamna Gleamsilver, gnome rogue (arcane
trickster); Tomaz Stormwind, human ranger (hunter); Druscilla Oakenrock,
dwarven cleric (trickster) Over
a cold breakfast, the reunited party comes up with a plan of action, setting off
at about 8:00 in the morning to once again scale the cliff stairs to the cavern
system. In the entrance cave they pause so that Naergon can cast clairvoyance,
establishing that the situation in the final chasm has not changed much. Talis
is still orchestrating repairs on the lifting equipment at the far end of the chasm,
the other cultists are spread across the chamber obviously guarding the doorway.
The spectral image has moved back somewhat and hovers over the stepping-stone
path, everyone appears to be alert and ready. Naergon
passes this information on to the others, then conducts a ritual to bestow Rary’s
telepathic bond on the party. Finally, turning to the others he says, “ right let’s go ”, Jamna passes a bead of
force to Druscilla and Mads “let’s do it .”
The party advances through the empty cavern system and take up position on the stairs
in front of the final door. Mads calls forth Ringo, his imp familiar, which immediately
turns invisible. With
that, Druscilla activates her helmet and teleports herself, Mads and Ringo to
the far end of the chasm. As they emerge, it is apparent that their aim is off
and all three slam straight into the floating stones, Ringo is dispelled
instantly as the teleport attempts to redirect them, eventually setting Druscilla
and Mads on the stones of the pathway. As they disappear, Jamna operates the door
lock and slides the door open, immediately taking cover at the edge of the
doorway. One of the dragonwings on the pathway shoots at Druscilla, the bolt
clipping her in the shoulder, she staggers but maintains her footing. The dragonwing
then flaps over towards them, tattered cloak trailing. The next dragonwing
shoots at Mads but misses and then also flaps closer. The dragonwings on the end
platform both shoot at Mads, one hitting him squarely in the chest, Mads staggers,
then falls, arms whirling as he plummets towards the lava below. Talis turns
and casts confusion at Druscilla who feels the sensation of disorder and chaos grappling
in her mind but it slides off before it takes hold. Naergon advances up the stairs
and casts web across the entrance platform and stones. The dragonfang adjacent
to the door, ducks underneath the web and steps up to Jamna, stabbing with its
shortsword, sliding the frosty blade into her guts [DADV due to dodge + Uncanny
Dodge]. The other dragonfang fails to break out of the web. Tomaz steps past Jamna
and casts lightning arrow and shoots at Talis hitting her, the lightning arcing
across to burn one of the dragonwings as well. Mads casts fly on himself and
starts to rise up the chasm towards the platform. Kusphia
throws an orb at Tomaz, it shatters across him, ice and frost covering him from
head to foot. He turns and shouts at the dragonwings behind him “ you two, deal with the dwarf ”. Druscilla
pulls her bead of force and throws it towards Talis on the platform, one of the
dragonwings is pushed out to the north, the other is pushed off the platform
and falls, cloak flapping, towards the lava. Talis is caught [Naergon portent:
save roll =1] and bound inside the sphere. Jamna attacks the dragonfang with
her shortsword but misses. The falling dragonwing flutters up towards Mads and
takes a shot with its crossbow, hitting him. The icy bolt plunges into his thigh
but Mads maintains his concentration [fly]. The dragonwing on the platform also
shoots at Mads, hitting him in the shoulder, again Mads retains his
concentration [fly]. The dragonwing on the stone pathway flaps across to Druscilla
and attacks with a shortsword, missing. The other dragonwing also flies in and attacks
Druscilla, this time stabbing her, the cold blade sliding past her armour.
Talis pushes at the sphere in
frustration, whilst Naergon casts mirror image on himself. The dragonfang stabs
Jamna twice [dodge + uncanny dodge], the second dragonfang fails to break out
of the web. Tomaz drops his bow and stabs the dragonfang with his spear and
then rather belatedly casts hunters mark on it. Mads continues to fly up
towards the platform and takes his second wind [10HP]. Kusphia
pulls a second orb and throws it at Tomaz, again it shatters over the ranger
covering him in ice and frost. Druscilla casts flame strike on the two
dragonwings attacking her, burning both. Jamna stabs the dragonfang, injuring it
badly [ADV due to inspiration + sneak attack]. The dragonwings stab at
Druscilla hurting her badly [ADV for pack tactics, both CRIT]. The dragonwing
on the platform shoots down at Mads but misses. The last dragonwing flies towards
Mads and shoots, also missing. Talis casts a spell within the sphere, to no
obvious effect. Naergon casts fire bolt at the dragonfang
stabbing Jamna, burning it. The first dragonfang stabs at Jamna again but can’t
hit her as she nimbly dodges about whist the other dragonfang fails to break
free of the web. Tomaz stabs the dragonfang twice, injuring it badly before
stepping away down the stairs. Mads flies up to the platform, behind the
dragonwing and then action surges to attack with his glaive, cutting the dragonwing
down. Kusphia
throws his third orb at Naergon, obliterating one of his mirror images in a
sheet of ice. Druscilla casts dimension door and steps onto the staircase
behind Jamna, who stabs the dragonfang to her front, killing it [sneak attack].
A dragonwing flies in towards Mads from the stones where Druscilla disappeared.
Mads strikes it as it comes in, the dragonwing then stabs him. The second
dragonwing also flies in and stabs him twice [ADV pack tactics]. The last
remaining dragonwing flies up towards the platform. Talis casts a spell within the
sphere, again with no obvious effect . Naergon
casts lightning bolt at Kusphia burning him badly, before stepping back from the
door as Tomaz casts cure wounds [22HP] on himself. Mads attacks the closest
dragonwing, killing it and then closes on the other and chops it down to. Kusphia
pulls out his crossbow and shoots at Jamna, missing. Druscilla casts mass cure
wounds [28HP] on all except Mads. Jamna pulls her Shortbow and shoots at the
dragonfang in the web but misses. Naergon steps forward and again casts
lightning bolt at Kusphia who dodges the bulk of the damage. Tomaz drops his spear,
moves and picks up his bow, casts lightning arrow and shoots Kusphia,
inflicting more lightning damage, before stepping back down the stairs. Mads moves
and kicks the force sphere containing Talis off the edge of the platform and
then casts eldritch blast at Kusphia, shoving him into the web, then blasts the
dragonwing in mid-air with another two bolts, shoving it further away. Kusphia
evades the webs and flies to the door, landing in front of Jamna and stabbing
her with his icy shortsword. Druscilla runs up the stairs, drops her shield,
pulls out her crossbow and shoots at Kusphia but misses. Jamna stabs Kusphia as
Talis drops towards the lava in her sphere. The dragonwing flies up and lands
on one of the stones, shooting at Mads but missing. Naergon casts fire bolt at
Kusphia but misses as the dragonfang again fails to break out of the web. Tomaz
drops his bow, picks up his spear, moves forward whilst casting hunters mark on
Kusphia and then stabbing at him twice to no effect. Mads casts eldritch blast
on the dragonwing knocking it back off the pathway, cloak flapping wildly, it
falls again. Kusphia
stabs Tomaz, his icy sword sliding through the ranger’s armour. Druscilla casts
dimension door and steps across to the far platform near Mads. Jamna stabs
Kusphia [sneak attack] as the dragonwing slowly flaps his way back up towards
the stone pathway. Talis falls into the lava, floating in the force sphere.
Naergon casts grease on the door and platform around Kusphia, who manages to
stay on his feet. The dragonfang fails again to break out of the web. Tomaz
stabs Kusphia with his spear whilst Mads eldritch blasts the dragonfang in the web
multiple times. Kusphia
stabs at Tomaz but fails to get past his defences, although he keeps his footing
in the grease. Druscilla steps to the edge and shoots at the dragonwing, the
bolt slamming home as she steps back to reload. Jamna stabs Kusphia, killing
him [sneak attack] as the dragonwing flies up under the stone pathway. Talis
rolls the sphere across the lava underneath the stones as Naergon casts chill
touch on the dragonfang in the web, who again fails to break free. Tomaz moves
past Jamna, drops his spear and grabs his bow, casting hunters mark on the
dragonfang before moving back and shooting it twice. Mads casts eldritch blast
on the webbed dragonfang again hitting it multiple times. Druscilla
steps forward and shoots at the dragonwing but misses before stepping away from
the edge. Jamna drops her sword and pulls her Shortbow, shooting at the
dragonfang, finally killing it. The dragonwing clambers onto the pathway and
shoots at Druscilla, but misses. Talis rolls the sphere further under the
stones as Naergon drops his concentration on the web, advances to the door and
casts firebolt on the dragonwing, killing it. Tomaz readies an action to shoot
the spectral guardian if it acts in a hostile manner. Mads turns to Druscilla
and readies himself to assist her in investigating the lifting equipment on the
platform. Next
