If you haven't had the chance to check it out yet, Roll20 has its very own Wiki with tons of good information. That would be a wonderful place to get started learning about the site: https://wiki.roll20.net/Main_Page#The_Roll20_Virtual_Tabletop

Welcome to Roll20! To get kicked off right, I'd suggest watching our introductory video series, Introduction to Tabletop RPGs series , which covers the general idea of how they are played, which game to choose and then find a group of fellow gamers. Secondly, for the Virtual TableTop itself we have a Tutorial that shows you how to use the various parts of the software.Additionally, starting your own test game to play with the controls is an excellent way of getting used to the software, and you really can't break anything I promise! Thirdly, check out the Looking For Group Tool and Looking for Group Forum daily for games that may be of interest to you. Fourth, be sure to completely fill out your User Profile . Your Bio is where you have a chance to catch a GM's eye with a well-written statement about yourself Enjoys Playing is important for two reasons: Every entry you put here is a data-point for The Orr Group Industry Report of games being played, and it lets other people looking at your profile know a bit more about you Actively Seeks Group For is where you can add yourself to the Player Directory for systems you want to play We have a wiki that grows weekly and is very much worth exploring. Feel free to ask any questions you have about Roll20 by posting in the various sub-forums on their particular topics (Don't stress about putting topics in the right sub-forums, we mods really don't mind moving topics when needed!) Happy gaming!

However, it can be used in some limited ways, and some users report it works for them. Just be aware it is not meant to replace the desktop version. Roll20 works fairly well on a desktop or laptop computer, however you will likely need a secondary voice/video program, as their own voice/video program is virtually unusable: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/6248510/video-and-voice-chat-integrated-webrtc I'm not aware of any groups who consistently use only Roll20's own system, but of course I don't have access to that information. In my experience, every group I've played with or talked to uses a secondary external system for voice communication. Discord is a popular choice, possibly the most popular voicechat method on Roll20. As a free user, you have a very limited selection of assets provided for you through the in-game search. However, you also have a limited storage space you can use to import your own assets for use in your games. .jpg and .png files are supported; .gifs are also said to be supported, but they will only show the first frame and will not animate. Be warned that creating a map using the in-game system on the map layer can cause excessive lag if you use a lot of individual assets. The recommended method is to create your maps using an external program, then importing it through your library as a single finished image. Depending on the game you intend to run, some Roll20 users have provided advanced character sheets, and some of these are available without a PRO or PLUS subscription. Be aware that some of these character sheets utilize numerous Attribute fields, which is another primary source of lag. The Marketplace contains lots and lots of assets, including tokens, maps, modules, and entire rulesets you can purchase. Please read the descriptions of these carefully. The contents of these asset packs are made and utilized in different ways, so be sure that you understand the contents of a given purchase before you make it. Users have reported confusion when purchasing items that were not what the user expected, so buyer beware. If you decide Roll20 is right for you, consider upgrading your subscription to PLUS or PRO level. This will give you access to some of the more advanced features of Roll20, such as Dynamic Lighting and Advanced Fog of War. However, if you do choose to use these features, be aware that they too are known sources of lag, and may hinder performance on older machines. As mentioned above, there is a large community of users here on Roll20's own website, and on other websites such as Reddit , where users are able to share their experiences and tips for improving the Roll20 experience. Finally, also as mentioned above, Roll20 has a Looking for Group forum which can help you to find a suitable game and/or group. Have patience; it sometimes takes several tries to find the game and gaming group which suits your personality and playstyle. There are lots of us who enjoy this hobby and would gladly help you enjoy it too! If you have any other questions, we in the Roll20 community are listening and would love to help you gain all you can from the Roll20 platform. Just post and let us know; that's what these forums are for! Good luck, and welcome to Roll20! -Phnord PS: While this post does include links to external websites, I believe their use is within the established guidelines, as they are not specifically advertising any sales or other prohibited functions.
