Part 1 - In which our heroes dither and procrastinate Book Two, Chapter 3.2 (session 66, 20 th November 2018) The Party: Naergon Harna, elven wizard (Diviner) Mads Rangle, human fighter/warlock (Fiend: Archdevil Zariel) Jamna Gleamsilver, gnome rogue (Arcane Trickster) Tomaz Stormwind, human ranger (Hunter) Druscilla Oakenrock, dwarven cleric (Trickery: Mask) Talis Wintercrest, half-elven cleric (War: Bane) Whilst Tomaz continues to observe the camp and Naergon uses his clairvoyance to study the interior of the tent there is much discussion and planning as to how they might grab the two dragon masks. Plans include polymorphing into insects to gain entry, teleporting in for a smash ‘n’ grab, masking the tent with silence, walls of force, blade barrier or similar. In the end no-one is very confident of their ability to get in and back out again. Mads suggests that they create a diversion to divert the attention of the minions whilst others teleport in and grab the masks from Rezmir and Galvan. Tomaz dismisses this as just alerting everyone as to their presence, Druscilla and Naergon point out that Rezmir knows they are in the area. Tomaz says he doesn’t think the cultists are aware that they’re here at the camp. Naergon agrees but says he can’t see how a distraction here would help – it would have to be some distance away to pull the minions away. Tomaz is concerned they would just send a scouting group to investigate. Mads adds that if it was him, he’d send the dragon to check it out. Druscilla says “ but that’s a good thing isn’t it?” Mads finishes by saying “ yes but it leaves all the minions here.” After a while Druscilla continues “ I still like that idea though, especially if we could put a dragon up in the sky ”. Naergon purses his lips “ I could put a dragon in the sky but I’d need to relearn some spells first and I’m pretty sure this lot will be packed up and gone by then”. “Agreed” says Mads, “ I get the distinct impression this lot will be packing up and leaving fairly soon – certainly today.” “Hang on ” says Naergon, “ if they are going to pack up and move, how are they doing that?” Druscilla says “ they could teleport . . .” “What? All of them?” says Naergon, “ I don’t think so” Tomaz turns to Talis and snarls “ So, I’m no fan of having you here. Time to earn some salt. What can you do to make this situation better?” “Such a charmer, I bet all the snakes adore you. Well I can do many thinks: flame strike, insect plague, silence, hold person, guardian of faith. I’m sure if I’d been allowed to keep that shiny rod I’d be able to be more useful. Or I could just satisfy your suspicions and let Galvan know you’re here . . .maybe I have already?” “I’m still in favour of distraction ” says Naergon. “ Yes, works for me too ” says Mads, “ let’s say it works and oh I dunno, half the minions, the dragon and Galvan all leave. Which is probably better than we can hope. What would our next move be?” “Hmm” muses Naergon, “ well firstly, you’d hope they wouldn’t go in person to investigate but rather despatch minions led by one of the others – the half blue dragon warrior for instance. Ideally we’d like both mask wearer’s to stay behind but whatever, we’d be looking at generating a situation where it would be more likely a teleport and grab mission could succeed. I think” “I understand that Naergon ” explains Mads, slowly, “ let me be clear. If there were no guards and just the four in the tent, and the dragon I guess, would you be happy to take our chances in an assault?” “Well, to be honest, I’d be happier I we were back in Waterdeep having a bath and a glass of wine or even talking to the Council. But if we’re going to go and do this, I think that’s as good as it gets. You see my view is that I’m not absolutely convinced it’s the best course of action. We might be better of trying to follow them or track them. If we go in here and now, that’s no small undertaking, this isn’t a minor skirmish this is a serious challenge and ” he lowers his voice to a whisper, whilst looking sidelong at Talis “ if we’re honest we’ve struggled against Rezmir on her own, we struggled against Talis, we struggled against Neronvein. And that was with planning, so am I convinced of this as a plan? No I’m not!” Mads leans back, chewing on some hardtack and studies Naergon carefully “ Ok, yes, I’m with you absolutely. I agree, you’re right, yes this battle cannot be won” “Absolutely ” says Naergon “ it can’t be done”. “I agree also ” says Druscilla. Mads looks from one to the other “ So, we just wait and see where they go?” “Yes, and follow them from a distance ” agrees Druscilla. Tomaz leans across and says “ If they do camp up for the night, then I think we should strike.” “They won’t ” chorus Mads and Naergon. Mads continues “ but if they do, you’re more than welcome to go and do so .” “Right then ” says Tomaz “ I’ll make myself comfortable on the rise and observe ” [casts pass without trace and uses Hide in Plain Sight]. Talis lays down, stretches herself out and tips her hat over her face “ let me know if you decide to do something ” she mutters. Over the next couple of hours Tomaz watches the cultists eat in a rota. At about midday, Rezmir, Galvan, the half-blue dragon and the other human come out of the tent. Galvan and Rezmir walk up to the dragon whilst the half-blue and human head off and call groups of cultists to order before starting to issue commands. The cultists begin to converge in clumps on these leaders. Galvan mounts the blue dragon, then puts his hand down and helps Rezmir up behind him. Tomaz watches Galvan carefully and sees him pull something small from his belt as the dragon rises some ten to fifteen feet into the air. Then all three blink out of existence. Tomaz continues to watch in silence as the cultists start to pack up the camp, many of them collapsing the large tent and stripping it into man-portable packs. The half-dragon and human from the tent are clearly in command and within an hour the mass of cultists have roughly sorted themselves into a march column and start to leave. Eventually Tomaz alerts the party to what has happened. Mads looks up “ so everything we were after, Rezmir, Galvan the masks, has gone then?” “Yes, looks like ” says Druscilla. Talis yawns as Druscilla says “ well that didn’t work. Are we going to try and grab one of these two now?” “We’d have to fight them all” objects Mads, “ I’m just throwing it out there ” says Druscilla “ because, otherwise how are we going to find out where the masks have gone?” “I have no idea how you track someone who teleported ” says Mads. “ You’ don’t dear ” says Talis from beneath her hat “ you need to already have a handle on them ”. Druscilla turns her back and continues “ we can’t, so we need to find out where they’ve gone”. “Yes, yes, agreed ” responds Mads, “ it’s just there’s a lot of them and grabbing one of the leaders is likely to be difficult” “Worth a shot though isn’t it?” asks Druscilla “ Maybe – I’d imagine if there was one who’d know it would be that half-blue” says Mads. Druscilla turns to the rest “ Well, what do you think? We’re going to have to act quickly if we’re going to do anything ”. Mads says “ well, I’m kind of interested in seeing what they are going to do next”. “What if they all disappear?” says Druscilla. “ What? You think they’ve all got teleport? Seems unlikely” stutters Mads. “No! ” says Naergon. “ Me neither ” agrees Mads, “ I think we just wait it out and see where they’re going ”. “ OK” says Druscilla. “ I agree ” confirms Naergon. Neither Tomaz nor Jamna say anything as Druscilla and Mads look around. From beneath her hat Talis mutters “I’m beginning to understand how Rezmir keeps getting away”. For the next 25 days the party follows the column of cultists as they march roughly south-west across the desert, crossing the Black Road and heading ever more southwards towards the Sunset Mountains. Several days in Mads raises the possibility of sneaking in amongst the cultists, disguising themselves and infiltrating the column. Tomaz rejects the idea as too risky. Druscilla asks what’s to gain, “ Do we need to take that chance?” “Possibly not” admits Mads “ but where they are going to is probably better defended and harder to break in to than the camp back there” “Undoubtedly” agrees Druscilla “ however at least we’ll know where they are and be able to report back”. “Ok then ” Mads concurs, “ Besides ” continues Druscilla “ they may just go somewhere we know”. Mads turns to Tomaz “ so, the other day, you told me you were a member of the Harpers, or at least that’s who you worked for, Right?” “Agreed” nods Tomaz solemnly. “ Right, so what support are they intending on offering. Other than sending you to make notes on Naergon’s performance?” continues Mads. “ They grant me the same support that I’m sure your faction awards you” replies Tomaz rather huffily. “ Hey, what support am I being offered?” questions Mads. “Well, I don’t know ” stutters Tomaz. “ So, how can you say that you’re being given the same?” demands Mads. Tomaz glares, sniffs and keeps marching. Mads tries again, “look, Tomaz, maybe we’re talking past each other here. Have your Harper friends told you ‘find the place and we’ll send six thousand soldiers to take down the cult’ or something similar?” Tomaz continues to stare ahead “well that is indeed what I would hope they would do”. “But they’ve made no promise, offer or guarantee?” pushes Mads. “All I am doing is scouting for them ” snaps Tomaz. “ yes, yes, I realise that ” Mads continues “ but if you scout it at, find the site, go back to the Harpers and tell them that have they said to you that when they get that information they’ll send the troops in?” “No they have not made that definitive statement” replies Tomaz “ have they insinuated that then?” “Again it’s up the Council, they will decide.” Tomaz grunts. “ Oh, sorry. So, it’s not the Harpers then that will support you it’s the whole Council?” Tomaz stops, stares at Mads “ The Harpers are a fundamental part of the Council, my information is fed to them, they pass that to the Council and then in discussion and with the agreement of the Council decide on a course of action. A course of action that benefits all. The support itself will come from the members of the Council not the Harpers alone.” “Naergon ” Mads calls, dropping back in the line a bit “ the Harpers have they promised you any actual support should we find the cult base? Are they going to do something or is everything just in your hands?” “Ah, harrumph, well, no. Err that is, they haven’t told me the specifics of anything in particular no. I think it goes along the lines of ‘as we get more information, we might decide to do something’ but no, I haven’t been promised anything”. “OK” says Mads, looking at the others. Druscilla catches his eye “no I have nothing to add to that” Mads, stops in his tracks. “ Ok, the reason I asked and the reason I’m kind of shocked by your responses is that I’m in an entirely different situation” “Yes, Mads, we know. You’ve got a devil on your shoulder, we know !” says Naergon snippily. “ I have more than that Naergon ” cries Mads, “ I have an assurance that when this place is found, let me know and an army will be there!” That’s cool” says Druscilla. “ Yeah, good for you ” agrees Naergon. Mads looks around “ well I was thinking two armies are better than one but apparently we only have one. At the moment.” “I suspect we’ll only ever have one ” says Naergon. “ OK?” says Mads unhappily. “ Hey, if your guys are really that good we may only need to hang around as bystanders” Naergon says “ with luck ” Druscilla turns back “ The question is, considering where his support comes from. Do we want them to get it though?” Naergon looks up at the late evening sun “ we’ll have to worry about that then I think. At the end of the day if there needs to be a mass assault I’m sure the Lords Alliance will provide the armies to do that, hopefully the Dwarf Lords, Baldurs Gate even Cormyr and others will as well but as I understand the Council’s intent or hope at least, and our purpose is to try and foil this attempt without resorting to that. The belief is that, if we can snaffle the masks then the ritual can’t take place and thus no Return of Tiamat. If we can’t prevent the ritual taking place then it will be all out war. Now I don’t know about you but I have my suspicions that if it comes to that there will be thousands of soldiers pitted against thousands of cultists but that someone is going to have to penetrate the inner sanctum or whatever and physically interrupt or stop the ritual. Who do you think the Council will pick for that juicy job?” “Wow, yeah, guess so” says Mads, scratching Ringo on the head. “ So, I guess we just follow this lot and see if they lead us anywhere?” “Yes” agrees Druscilla “ and then report it back to our contacts” Eventually, after many days travel the cult column emerges into the foothills of the Sunset Mountains, an area of stony plains broken up by sharp cliffs, mesas and ridges dotted with sturdy fortified villages, clinging to the top and sides. With the Sunset Mountains themselves still over a hundred miles away the column starts to break up, individual clumps and groups of cultists heading to different villages. As the density of the villages and frequency of cult patrols increases the party start to hang back eventually they can no longer safely track the cult leaders and lose the trail in the increasingly heavy traffic. Tomaz casts around in an attempt to pick up the somewhat distinctive tracks of the half-blue dragon [survival 9] but can’t distinguish them. It seems clear that the closer to the mountains they get, the closer to the centre of cult activity. Finding somewhere to hole up in a concealed ravine the party discusses what to do now. Mads says “ I reckon we could go into one of the villages and grab some prisoners for interrogation?” Tomas says “I think we should report back to our sponsors and inform them that we have located the cult army ” Druscilla interrupts “ I’m not sure we can be certain we have, have we?” “Well maybe, maybe not ” continues Tomaz “ but an attack here with the forces of the Lords Alliance could eliminate a lot of cultists”. “OK ” agrees Mads “it can’t hurt to tell them, let us know when they get back to you with instructions”. Mads continues “and whilst we’re waiting how about we do a village?” “Hmm ” says Druscilla “ I’m not sure how much good that will do, won’t we just alert them to danger? I mean that has to be a risk right?” Mads ponders “ yes, but there’s always a risk right? Just sitting here is a risk!” “Those of us with solid disguise abilities, Jamna that’s you as well, I think we could infiltrate safely enough. Though I’m not sure what we get out of it” says Druscilla. From the back of the ravine Talis mutters “ I’m beginning to understand how Rezmir eluded you for so long”. “Oh, here we go” growls Mads. “ Look darling, it’s just an observation. Anyway, remind me what’s your plan?” Mads slowly and with careful enunciation spells out “ I believe the plan is that we’re waiting for Tomaz’s contacts to get back to him with instructions from the Council. He’s informed them that we have found the location of the cult army or at least a significant part of it you see.” “Oh, I see, that’s lovely dear, and then what do we do?” “Well it rather depends on their response!” growls Mads. “Ok, whatever ” and Talis lays down under her hat once more. Mads glowers at her. Druscilla, changing the subject says “ Naergon, what are your thoughts?” “Err, hmm. I don’t know really. I think . . . well maybe . . . you know I can’t really be bothered with these villages. I don’t think these minions are going to know the first thing about the main event.” After a moments pause, he continues “And the main event isn’t going to be in these villages anyway. I mean sure if you want to infiltrate a village and ask some questions sure. Like, well for one thing why here? What’s here that makes them want to gather here, now? I mean this isn’t where the ritual’s happening is it? I don’t think so!” “Well they have to live somewhere” says Tomaz. “ Yeah sure, I get that” agrees Naergon. Mads interjects “ well if they gathered in these numbers in a city they soon attract too much attention wouldn’t they? That’s why they’re out here in the middle of nowhere” “Yes, yes, fair points but what I mean is why here? There’s no cult leaders here are there? No wyrmspeakers just a bunch of grunts and a few sergeants with their families sitting around in villages. Where did the main guys go ?” muses Naergon. “ Well, the half-blue went south towards the mountains ” says Mads. “ Well then we should go further south ” says Naergon. “ Yep, I’m for that ” agrees Druscilla. Tomaz says “ South is a bit vague, I lost their tracks some time ago. All we know is they went south towards the mountains, we lost our opportunity when we let Rezmir and Galvan teleport away”. “What opportunity? ” spits Mads. Everyone stares southwards towards the looming presence of the Sunset Mountains. “ What do we know about these mountains anyway?” asks Naergon “ What’s here? Wasn’t there a volcanic cauldron called The Well of Dragons, isn’t that in this area?” “No idea” says Mads, “me neither ” adds Tomaz. Talis puts a hand on Naergon’s shoulder, leans in and points to the eastern end of the mountain range “ The Dragon’s Well is between the third and fourth peaks darling. An ancient extinct volcano, once home to some granddaddy red wyrm according to legend. Why do you ask?” Mads stands up and peers across the dusty miles “ The Well of Dragons? Do you think that’s where they’ll hold the ritual?” “We’ve come across many a reference to it ” says Naergon, turning and removing her hand from his shoulder “Talis, what do you know?” “Oh dear, the total tonnage of what I know would crush you. But yes the Well of dragons has been mentioned by many of the wyrmspeakers. Of course I was never invited but as I understand it, it’s very important to Severin. Wouldn’t surprise me if that was where he’d hold his ritual. It has the right ring to it doesn’t it?” Mads turns “ yes absolutely it sounds like it is. Didn’t you feel like sharing earlier? Could have saved us a lot of time and effort” “But Maddsy, I thought you knew, after all you’ve been chasing after me for all these months I felt certain you knew as much as I did about the cult by now” Naergon sighs deeply “ well that’s where we should go then. If Rezmir and Galvan have gone anywhere that’ll be it. Unless anyone has a better idea?” “No, I haven’t ” says Druscilla “ not that I’m saying that I think that’s a good idea either, you understand?” “I think we should tell the Council ” says Tomaz “before we do anything else”. “Agreed” says Druscilla “ I think we should all make our reports that the Well of Dragons is the suspected focal point and see what they want us to do next”

Part 2 - Waterdeep Decision made, the several members of the party make their reports to their contacts. Universally they receive the same message back, phrased differently but all indicating that there has been a significant shift in information. That the Council has been contacted with an offer or opportunity and that the party should return immediately to Waterdeep so that they can be briefed. After a brief discussion Druscilla activates her helmet and transports all six back to the Council chamber in Waterdeep. On arrival, Lady Loeral and the rest of the Council meet with them, Lord Neverember has a new companion, a dark haired half-elf introduced as Rian nightshade. The majority of council members seem to shun her. However Loeral informs the party that Rian was recently contacted by a senior member of the cult called Iskander. She hands over a rather formal looking letter, complete with wax seal styled as a dragon’s skull. “You don’t know me, but we can help each other immeasurably. My name is Iskander, and I made a terrible mistake in joining the Cult of the Dragon. The cult’s horrifying plans are sure to bring doom to all, but I can stop those plans with your help. Rescue me from the cult’s clutches, and I will deliver to you the prize of prizes: the White Dragon Mask . Without it, Severin faces a significant setback in his effort to call Tiamat back to our world. The mask is here in Xonthal’s Tower, being studied and guarded by only a handful of wizards, including myself. “The danger of my treason becoming known grows with every passing day, and if I’m discovered, I’ll surely be killed. Please hurry, for the sake of everyone and everything you value.” “I think we should act on this” says Loeral, “ I’m aware it may be, even likely is, a trap but it’s also an opportunity” . She looks back at Rian “ I’m aware that many of you” looks from one Council member to the next in turn “ have doubts about the source of this information but I remind you that we are all in this together. The Black Network may resonate sourly with many of you, I certainly am old enough to remember the atrocities of Zhentil Keep but for now our interests are aligned” “I and the Council ” again she looks around as if daring anyone to object “ would like you to investigate this. You have the means to reach Xonthal’s Tower, if it’s a ruse so be it. But if there’s a chance any chance of recovering a second mask we must take it. I acknowledge the information that you have provided on the Well of Dragons and I think we will agree eventually that mustering the armies of the North to assault the army encamped there is in our best interests. However that will take some time and I would rather not advertise that fact that we have located their seat of power. So go investigate this Iskander and gain what you can from him. On your return, hopefully we will be able to coordinate military action with a surgical strike into this Well of Dragons – anything you can find out about the site beforehand would be helpful.” Tomaz steps forward and throws an accusing hand out, pointing at Talis “ We also have this renegade cultist in our midst. She may be able to verify the identity of this Iskander. That is unless My Lady wouldn’t just prefer to throw in irons right now!” There’s a hushed intake of breathe from the other Council members as Talis steps from behind the party and bows low, doffing her hat “ My Lady, My Lords, I offer my services here as a reformed member of this silly but ever so dangerous cult. If you’re prepared to trust this Iskander’s word on the recommendation of a Zhentarim then surely you’ll accept my services on the recommendation of the worthy Naergon Harna.? Besides set a thief to catch a thief right? Right Rian?” and she looks hard straight at the half-elf would slips further into Lord Neverember’s shadow. Lady Loeral stands “ Yes, well if Naergon vouches for this person and if she is of value to the mission then I for one will accept his recommendation.” Naergon steps forward “ Err, yes she’s proven very helpful and I’m certain she is no cult agent, I think, err, harrumph”. Stepping closer to Talis and staring straight into her eyes Loeral continues, “ However, be under no illusion that any conspirator, traitor or friend of this cult will find no peace, no safety and no safe harbour anywhere in the north once this is done. Now go, prepare and see what this Iskander has to say for himself!” Mads steps up “ Talis do you know this Iskander, have you heard of him?” “No Maddsy, never heard of him, no need to get jealous dear” replies Talis as she flounces past him, flicking her hat over his face. As she reaches the doors, she says over shoulder “ I think we had our marching orders, who’s coming with me?”

Part 3 - Xonthal's Tower The party take their leave, take a couple of hours to purchase supplies and pursue some personal matters, then once again Druscilla teleports them out, this time to the outskirts of the village of Xonthal’s Tower. The village straggles around the immense maze that in turn encircles the ancient stepped tower. The locals are friendly enough, but wary and the party spends sometime in discussion with various villagers. They discover that things were quiet here for a long time, but for almost a year now, the villagers have seen lights through the windows at night and heard unearthly sounds. A few claim to have seen a blue dragon lingering in the sky high above. Some villagers scoff at that idea, but everyone agrees that the tower has been reoccupied. Although clearly none of them know what is happening within the tower, they have many, many theories. The most popular being that Xonthal has returned or has awakened as a lich, or that one of the genies and elementals he once imprisoned has finally broken free of its restraints but remains trapped inside the tower. The villagers warn the characters sternly about the danger of entering the maze. Few who enter it ever come back out, and those who do come out are much worse for wear. Even animals and birds avoid the maze. Acknowledging their fears, Naergon leads the party directly to the arched entrance way and without a backward glance strides inside. As he does, the party notices movement high up on the tower. A human male dressed in black cult robes stands on the balcony, waving something over his head. It’s hard to make out details from this distance, but it might be a mask. “ Heroes,” the figure screams, “ they saw you in the village! I’ve taken the mask, but they’ll realize it’s missing within minutes! Look for me beneath the tower, for it’s the only place I have a chance to hide. This is the key that will let you teleport into the dungeon.” As he speaks, the figure holds aloft a second item—some sort of white, glimmering hourglass. “I will leave it behind after I use it, but others may find it before you do.” The speaker looks over his shoulder as another figure suddenly dashes out onto the balcony. A flash of blades and spell-fire erupts. Then the figure who spoke pitches his attacker over the railing before dashing back inside. With a sense of urgency the party dashes along the path, the tall hedges closing in and blocking all sight of the tower, after several minutes they comes to an intersection where eight paths converge symmetrically. They can see Xonthal’s Tower dead ahead above the hedge wall, but the way the paths curve, there’s no telling which one might lead to it. A sundial stands in the centre of the intersection, the shadow from its gnomon pointing straight ahead, toward the tower—which is highly odd, because their own shadows stretch to their left, only the sundial’s shadow points ahead. Tomaz says “ Naergon I suggest you scout ahead down each of those paths with your arcane eye” “That would be an astoundingly good plan Tomaz, alas I have not memorized that particular spell today ” replies Naergon. “ Really” says Tomaz “ although you knew we were entering a maze?” “Yes, fine, well you can put that one in your book Tomaz, under black marks no doubt”. Druscilla looks around “ well the obvious thing would be to walk straight ahead, that’s where the sundial’s pointing” “Well I don’t see any better option” agrees Naergon and with Jamna leading, checking the ground [perception 21] the party head deeper into the maze. After a few minutes walking they emerge into another intersection that looks remarkably like the intersection they just left. Here the sundial’s gnomon’s shadow extends both straight ahead and to their right, the party’s shadow remains firmly to their left. Jamna decides that heading between the shadows to the top right is the way to go and starts down the path, the rest of the party silently follow her lead. After several minutes walking along turning and twisting paths, the looming hedges blocking all vision to the tower they come once more to the same or an identical intersection with a sundial. This time three shadows extend from the gnomon, one extends in front straight ahead, the others diagonally back to the party’s rear right and left. Again, the party’s shadow stretches to their left. Jamna comes to a halt “ Any idea?” “Err, not really ” answers Naergon. Mads looks ahead and says “ the tower is straight ahead still, not that it looks any closer”. Tomaz looks around, sniffs the air and confidently says “ we should go this way” pointing to the right. “Why?” asks Naergon. Tomaz shrugs “ Why not?” “Would a bird’s eye view help us?” asks Mads. “ Couldn’t hurt” replies Tomaz. “ I can send Ringo up to have a look for us?” so saying Mads launches Ringo up. As the imp flies up, Mads, looking through its eyes sees the tower immediately fade from sight, and the view become endless hedge-lined paths stretching to the horizon in every direction. “N o, that’s not going to help ” he says as Ringo returns to his side. “ Right it is then ” says Tomaz and turns and heads down the path. The rest of the party silently shrug and follow. After a few minutes walking along the twisting path they emerge into a large eighty-foot-square courtyard at the centre of which is a circular pool of water sixty feet across. The water is dark and murky, reducing visibility to about one foot. A garnet gemstone hovers one foot above the centre of the pool. Another path leaves the area through the hedge wall on the opposite side of the courtyard. “ Well this is different” says Tomaz “I think we should ignore the gemstone and just follow the path”. “I’m fine with that ” says Druscilla, “ yes let’s follow Tomaz ” says Mads, “OK ” agrees Naergon and the party walk past the pool and enter the hedge path on the far side. After a few minutes they enter another eighty-foot courtyard with a large pool at its centre, or the same one. Anyway, it also has a garnet floating in the air at the centre of the pool. “ OK well this is odd ” says Tomaz “ I think we should leave a trail or mark the ground “ says Mads. “ Ah that old maze trick ” nods Naergon sagely. Mads nods and scratches a broad X into the ground with the butt of his glaive. “ Do you think it’ll help if we take the gem?” asks Tomaz, “ Hmm, maybe ” replies Naergon “ Am I the only one that’s a bit concerned that this all seems a bit weird?” “It may be weird Naergon but it beats being stick in the desert for months” grumbles Mads. “ Hmm, not sure about that but I know what you mean ” Naergon replies. “ Well if we’re going to take this gem, I’d just like to cast a spell or two in advance if you don’t mind. I’m not convinced this is a happy maze !” With that Naergon casts mirror image on himself before using a mage hand to grab the gemstone, as he does so he shouts “RUN!”. The entire party races down the path as fast as possible, although nothing appears to be pursuing them. After a short run they emerge once again at an intersection. The gnomon casts three shadows, one points straight ahead, the others diagonally back to the party’s rear right and left. “ OK we’ve been here before ” says Mads “ or at least the shadows are the same as last time. I think we should head back the way we came but first I’m going to make a mark on the floor here”, No one disagrees and they turn back on themselves heading once again down the curving path. After a few minutes they again emerge at an intersection, this time the gnomon shadow points to all of the four diagonal paths. As the heroes’ watch, the shadows start slowly rotating around the face of the sundial, spinning faster and becoming shorter until they shrink into the gnomon and the sundial shows no shadow at all. “Oh my !” stutters Naergon “ is that some kind of sign?” “ No idea, but my mark’s not here” says Mads. “Try this Naergon, try placing the gemstone on top of the sundial ” suggests Tomaz. “ OK, I’ll try ” answers Naergon, “hang on the gems gone ” he cries, checking his pouches. “ I definitely had it here but it’s disappeared.” “We clearly weren’t supposed to use that then ” offers Mads “why don’t you check out the dial, maybe there’s a switch or something?” “OK, I’ll have a look, it’s just an ordinary looking sundial Mads. Well made and should work but it’s not casting any shadows. Which I have to admit is a bit odd” “we’re still casting shadows ” says Mads, pointing to the party’s shadows that stretch away to the left. “I suggest we go in this direction ” says Tomaz pointing right. “ Hang on, hang on ” cries Naergon “ not so fast. Why?”. “Ok, I’ll give a reason” continues Tomaz. “ There’s been a pattern, the shadows so far have pointed here and here but not here and the sun has consistently been behind us casting our shadows there, so this direction is the way we should go” “I’m not sure I understand ” says Naergon frowning. “ Well it’s a plan, if Tomaz is confident I’ve nothing better to offer, let’s go ” says Mads impatiently. “ Why doesn’t one of us stay here, just on case? ” suggests Naergon. “ Because that’s a terrible idea ” snaps Mads. “ Oh, OK,” Naergon backs down and lets Mads and Tomaz lead the way. Another short walk through the curving pathways, “Oh look at that! We’ve found a farm area” cries Mads as they emerge from the path into an area far larger than any open area, they expected to encounter in the maze garden. “A farm? A farm?” stutters Naergon. “ We haven’t got a clue what we’re doing have we?” The rectangular space is at least ninety feet across, with its far side almost 150 feet away. It looks like a boulder-strewn pasture, with a large pond to one side and a fenced vegetable garden and oversized cottage on the other. Sheep graze in the pasture, tended by a pair of cyclops, but none of them are moving. They all appear frozen in time. “OK” says Tomaz “well I would suggest walking straight past them, nonchalantly “Well you do that, make sure to take notes” mutters Naergon. “Oh come on” says Tomaz and steps forward. The others look at each other and start to follow. As they do so the scene around them erupts into motion, the sheep start grazing and the cyclops begin a conversation with each other, look at the party and then start a game of rock, paper scissors with each other. The party comes to a halt in front of the large cottage as the cyclops both stride towards them still talking quite amiably with each other. Tomaz doffs his cap and says “ Good Morning ” the cyclops both acknowledge he has spoken but continue talking to each other in their own rumbling tongue. The one who lost the game, reaches out and selects one of the large boulders, looks at the party grins and then turns and hurls it downfield to the far end of the field. The boulder rolls and bounces before coming to a halt some 120 feet away, the cyclops folds his arms and watches Tomaz. The other cyclops says something unintelligible, points to the boulder, then the other boulder and then the party, mimicking the action of throwing. He too then stands aside and watches. Naergon giggles and says “ I suggest you doff your cap and walk on by” Tomaz ignores him and continues “ that looks like a fine and fun game you’re playing. Err do you speak common?” The cyclops frown, point to the boulders and again at Tomaz and make throwing motions. Naergon continues to giggle but manages to gasp “ I think, think you’re supposed to throw, throw the boulder, Tomaz ” “I disagree” says Mads. Tomaz looks around and picks up a small stone and walks to the pond and skims it across, then smugly looks back at the cyclops, who both stand, arms folded, shaking their heads. Tomaz looks at them quizzically One of them points downfield to the boulder he threw, then again at one of the large boulders and beckons Tomaz back to it. “ That’s not going to work” giggles Naergon. “I think it’s pretty clear what they want you to do Tomaz ” says Naergon, getting his giggling under control at last. “I agree” says Mads. “ Yes, they want me to bugger off” says Tomaz. “ No! They want you to pick up the boulder and throw it downfield. I’m not sure if it’s good to throw further than them or not though ” says Mads. “ Or maybe, if you really want to impress them, pick up one of those sheep and chuck that !” he continues. Tomaz wonders over to one of the boulders, looks around and picks up a small stone. The cyclops sigh and shake their heads. Tomaz looks at them despairingly, walks up to a boulder and pushes at it to no effect, steps back, looks at them and shrugs. Behind him Naergon continues to giggle, Mads turns to him “ Naergon, do you have anyway to increase my strength momentarily?” Naergon, gasps and controls his giggling “ No, no I don’t ” he manages. Eventually Naergon admits “I can do this, I just don’t want to, as it involves using a powerful spell just to win a silly game” Mads turns to him in surprise “ so just do it already” “But it’s such a waste” Naergon whines “I can animate the boulder and have it move downfield. But it’s a shameful waste .” “Yes, well, just do that ” says Tomaz. “ Animate the boulder and make it look like I threw it” What?” cries Naergon “ After all this, you think you’re going to get to pretend you threw it. I don’t think so !” And with that he strides to one of the boulders, casts animate object and goes through the motions of pretending to throw it. As the boulder sails downfield, past their own, the cyclops whoop and clap and stomp their feet in delight. Then they wave the party past and go back to talking to each other. The party hurry past and exit the area through the far exit. After a few minutes’ walk they enter another intersection once again the gnomon shadow points to all of the four diagonal paths. As the heroes’ watch, the shadows start slowly rotating around the face of the sundial, spinning faster and becoming shorter until they shrink into the gnomon and the sundial shows no shadow at all . “Mads ” asks Naergon “why don’t you go and stand on the sundial? It’s driving me crazy this, all the shadows go into the dial so it’s like we’re supposed to go into the sundial” “I could attempt to kick the sundial over?” offers Mads. “ No” cries Tomaz. “ Can’t you stand on it, or sit on it or something” insists Naergon. “I still think we should go this way ” says Tomaz, pointing to the right “ opposite the way our shadows lie” “Forget our shadows” snaps Naergon. “Agreed” says Mads, “right from the beginning, our shadows have always laid to the left, always”. “ Yes, so we should be heading to the right ” insists Tomaz. “ NO!, no, no” shouts Naergon “ Mads, just humour me, just go and sit on the sundial please. See if you can make it move or something by getting on to it ”. Mads shrugs and walks up to the sundial, steps up and climbs onto the dial, as he does so there is a sucking noise and Mads appears to distort and stretch and he is sucked down into the dial and ‘schlop” he’s gone. “ Oh my !” giggles Naergon “ I wasn’t really expecting that, I rather thought the sundial would move. My, my. Well there we are ” Tomaz stares at him “ I say again, we should continue to the right. That way.” What?” Naergon shrieks in disbelief. “ That’s the only direction that we know that the sun or shadows are in a constant and, err its heading towards where, err, where the, err it’s heading towards that particular target. Which is the big tower!” stammers Tomaz. “Tomaz, with all due respect ” Naergon begins, with a touch acerbity “ there appears to be another way we can go. ” “Yes, well I’m not going to go via the sundial because that probably means you’ve been discombobulated or thrown into some unearthly dimension ” says Tomaz haughtily. “I don’t think so ” argues Naergon “I agree it’s a bit, well this maze is a bit, well its weird, I mean don’t you think it’s a bit weird, throwing boulders with cyclops and finding gems in pools? This seems to be a maze in more ways than normal and frankly being sucked into a sundial is beginning to look normal!” Naergon walks over to the sundial and peers at the dial “ I mean, I’m not saying it might not be a bit dangerous but I don’t see . . . ” and with that he climbs on to the sundial and as his feet sink into the dial his body elongates and ‘schlop’ he vanishes. “Well” says Talis “this looks like fun ” and with that jumps on the sundial and as she lengthens ‘schlop’ she vanishes. Jamna looks around “ well, if they’ve gone, we might as well join them ” and also climbs into the sundial and with another ‘schlop’ vanishes. “ Well I’m not staying here ” says Druscilla and clambers onto the dial and ‘schlop’ is sucked away, leaving Tomaz on his own. Tomaz wonders around the dial several times muttering about Naergon, eventually however he chooses to climb on the dial rather than remain alone, with a final ‘schlop’ he disappears from the maze. With a strange feeling of being stretched and reformed and a sudden jolt, one by one the party members land on their feet beside another sundial in another identical looking intersection. Looking up they see no evidence of where they might have come from, this intersection looks just like the east, they’re shadows stretch off to the left and the tower looms, no nearer straight ahead. The only difference this time is that the sundial points steady shadows in all eight directions. “Great” says Mads as the others join him “which way now? ” Naergon turns around “ eight shadows, that doesn’t help ” Last to arrive Tomaz, stands up and points to the right “ As I keep telling you, we must go this way, it’s the only way that makes sense.” Mads turns to him “ why don’t you go then? ” Tomaz stares at him, turns on his heel and heads down the path he has indicated. “ Oh crap ” sighs Mads “ well I guess we’d better follow ” and with that the party head down the curving path after Tomaz. Naergon looks ahead towards the tower “ but why don’t we just head towards the tower?” Tomaz calls back “Because it’s a maze ” his tone dripping in condescension. “ I know it’s a maze ” stutters Naergon in exasperation “and I’m going this way ” and starts towards the tower. “Naergon, come on, we cannot split up ” cries Mads. “ But I want to get to the tower ” says Naergon peevishly “ maybe this is the solution now, we have eight shadows, maybe we just take the direct route? And there’s no reason not to head straight for the tower in my opinion. In the end we’re randomly picking exists, might as well go direct” “OK, ok, well that makes some sense ” says Mads “ Tomaz, why is your idea better?” “Because if we’re heading in one direction, at least we’re heading in one direction and we’re not going to get lost .” Explains Tomaz. “ So why can’t that one direction be that way” asks Mads, pointing towards Naergon. “ Because that would be two directions ” explains Tomaz. “ Hey, what, how can it be two direction? We fell, err from the sky, or, or whatever, to here ” queries Mads. “Exactly into the same location we were in ” says Tomaz. “ How do you know it’s the same one ?” demands Mads ” Look, I marked the last intersection, the mark is gone, this must be somewhere else!” “Exactly ” says Tomaz “ then whatever direction we head in is good” Mads looks at Naergon, who returns his puzzled look. “ Ok then if any direction is good let’s head direct for the tower” says Naergon. “ Yes, but because it’s a maze it’s not going to be that simple” Tomaz argues. “ Well there’s a path that heads towards the tower and that’s the way I’m going ” says Naergon “ if you don’t want to come, I don’t care ” with that the wizard hitches his skirts and heads straight ahead to the tower. Mads looks around “ well I’m following Naergon ” and walks after the wizard. Jamna looks from one to the other “ I barely know you Tomaz ” turns and follows Mads. Talis looks around “ you lot crack me up but I’ll follow Maddsy and the wizard. Never much liked you much anyway Tomaz, bye, bye ” and flounces after them. Druscilla looks at Tomaz “ well Harper, I’m with them, your call ” and follows Naergon. Tomaz stands alone once again “ Oh, alright I’ll come with you but you’re all wrong!” Naergon leads the party down the curving path, ahead as the path straightens out, he sees a bubbling fountain filling the pathway. Large bright flowers grow in the hedges on both sides of the fountain, each blossom shimmering in the light. The air smells particularly fresh and sweet. Naergon looks at the flowers and fountain “ ignore it, follow me” he calls and walks straight past. The party follow him as she passes, Jamna can’t help but notice that the shimmering of the flowers is caused by a large pearl set in the centre of each. “What is it with this maze and gems” says Mads as Jamna points them out. “ I don’t know and I don’t care. It’s all weird, ignore it, keep walking ” declaims Naergon from the front. After a few minutes more, the path curves again and Naergon stops as ahead he sees the pearl flowers and fountain once again, or is it a different place. “ Oh Ok, well with no interaction with the pearls we end up back here ” says Mads. “That’s like the pool with the gem, so maybe we need to pick a pearl to progress?” “Well I’m not convinced ” says Naergon “ in fact I’m getting heartily fed up if this maze with its hedges. I say we should just start hacking through the hedges and make a new path to the tower. But if you want to pick a pearl, be my guest” Jamna casts mage hand and attempts to plucks one of the pearls from the flower nearest her. As she does so the flower opens and tentacles reach out towards her. On either side of the path more flowers come to life, petals and tentacles reaching hungrily towards the party. Jamna tugs “ I can’t pull the pearl free, oh grief now what?” “Oh, for the gods’ sake, can’t you just leave things alone Mads ” cries Naergon as he prepares to defend himself from the plants lining the path. “ It was Jamna not me” cries Mads, “ It was you Mads” says the wizard. Next time, is there a way out of this damn maze? Levels were gained this session: Naergon 14 th level Mads 13 th level Jamna 13 th level Tomaz 13 th level Druscilla 13 th level Talis 10 th level XP earnt is now irrelevant as the rest of TOD is based on milestone XP In-Game the session ended at 10:00 on 20 th Mirtul 1485 DR (The last Long Rest was completed at 06:00 by DO, JG, TS, NH, MR and Talis.
