detection: planetary mass

Ok, so what do they mean by a planetary mass? For instance, if you're orbiting a planet (not sure how close) and being silent, distance of detection = 1/8 normal. Planetary masses and stars hide completely. What do they mean by this. Wouldn't a planetary mass be just a planet, so ... you're orbiting it I guess?
Kinda funny, though, if you want to avoid a fight, you just accelerate into them. They should theoretically be already under max decel unless they already knew you were there somehow.
Space Combat in Traveller is rather hit or miss (pun intended).  It's not always easy to simulate without drawing vectors.  In fact I there has been no actual space combat in the campaign yet.  It's not the mass of the planet but being behind it.
