Hello Quentin. To use Roll20 does not require you to purchase anything. You can take anything you own that is supported by Roll20 and uplaod them to use if you so desire. Purchasing from Roll20 eliminates or reduces all the work you would have to do to prep the material (uploading, setting up dynamic lighting, etc.).

As for your title question, for future reference, this is the sort of question that goes into "Specific Use Questions and Macros" as in it's not a bug, but it is a question about how to use Roll20. And Pat has nailed the answer. Feel free to ask any further questions.
