So what do you do if you already have the pdfs for something outside roll20?  Do you have to. it it from the site to use it?

Hello Quentin. To use Roll20 does not require you to purchase anything. You can take anything you own that is supported by Roll20 and uplaod them to use if you so desire. Purchasing from Roll20 eliminates or reduces all the work you would have to do to prep the material (uploading, setting up dynamic lighting, etc.).
