Edit: Closed, thanks! I'm looking to start a second campaign now that I've got about 2-3
years of DM experience. I'm looking to run Curse of Strahd, so if you've
already gone through that campaign I'd appreciate you skipping out on
this. The sessions will be held Monday or Wednesday in the evening
(roughly 6pm PST.) There will be a small hiatus in April, but otherwise
we'll be sticking to this schedule for at least a few months (since I
know students have variable schedules.)
A brief primer for Curse of Strahd, feat. the back of the book:
Under raging storm clouds, a lone figure stands silhouetted
against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. The vampire Count Strahd
von Zarovich stares down a sheer cliff at the village below. A cold,
bitter wind spins dead leaves about him, billowing his cape in the
darkness.
Lightning splits the clouds overhead, casting stark white light
across him. Strahd turns to the sky, revealing the angular muscles of
his face and hands. He has a look of power — and of madness. His once
handsome face is contorted by a tragedy darker than the night itself.
Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind’s howling
increases as Strahd turns his gaze back to the village. Far below, yet
not beyond his ken, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain.
Strahd’s face forms a twisted smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew
they were coming, and he knows why they have come — all according to his
plan. He, the master of Ravenloft, will attend to them.
Another lightning flash rips through the darkness, its thunder
echoing through the castle’s towers. But Strahd is gone. Only the
howling of the wind — or perhaps a lone wolf — fills the midnight air.
The master of Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are
invited.
This is a gothic horror campaign. I'm going to lean on the gothic over the horror, but being careful is key.
Here's what I can offer :
As part of this campaign, you'll receive a custom, drawn character token. Here are previous tokens if you want reference. I have a Roll20 subscription and spend ages carefully making all my battlemaps, including custom assets. While you're a part of this campaign, you'll be added to my D&D
Beyond campaign, giving you access to all character creation options. I feel very strongly about player freedom, so I allow basically all
avenues in character building. If you want to do something, come to me
and I'll help you accomplish your vision within the scope of the rules.
With that being said, Curse of Strahd is a rather grim and serious
campaign, so no joke characters, please.
Here's what I need from players :
You have to be a team player . No lonely rogues. I'm giving heavy priority to players with more experience in 5th edition and Roll20 , but I'm not hostile to intermediate players as long as you put in the effort to learn quickly. Dedicated players who consider DnD a commitment are
very important to me. The game isn't something you do if you have
nothing else happening that week, it's something you want to do
consistently once a week. Make sure you put the word "sweet" somewhere inside your application so I know you've read this. Capable of giving advance notice if you can't make it some week. It
happens to everyone, I just want to be respected enough to be told. You must have a good microphone/voice/computer setup . Being able to hear my players clearly and enjoy hearing them is very valuable to me. Push-to-talk isn't a requirement until it becomes one. A short voice interview will be held to determine if you're a good
fit for the group (and to test for the above.) This shouldn't be more
than 5 or 10 minutes.
About the campaign :
Do not come to me with your character. Character
creation will be done amongst the group at Session 0, which is also
where we will be discussing campaign expectations. I'll be explaining
campaign expectations, helping out with character creation, and making
sure everything is tucked away for Session 1. I'm generally a pretty by-the-book kinda guy. I don't do rule of
cool very often, but if you want to flavor something without mechanical
consequences, I'll support you 99%* You'll be starting at level 1. Point buy Multiclassing is allowed. Feats are allowed. You don't have to do a character voice. You don't have to have a detailed backstory, just something to explain the circumstances that brought you here. I'm tentatively allowing Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica and
Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron, but since something like a Loxodon would
be dramatically out of place in Curse of Strahd, we'd have to talk about
it. Unearthed Arcana is allowed on a case-by-case basis. Loremaster Wizard, no. Stone Sorcerer? Probably. I'm considering starting the campaign with the notorious Death House prologue, but we can discuss it. Re: House rules, I don't have anything dramatic. We can discuss any
suggestions at Session 0, but you shouldn't expect to hear anything more
than "yeah I'm not going to pay attention carry weight" at most. The
only caveat to this is that I'm playing with the idea of Sorcerer's
using the spell point variant from the DMG, but that's also a maybe. No DMG flanking . I'm aiming for a party of five. If one person can't make it, we'll
still play. If two people are out, we'll have to skip the week. Whether
your character is still in play or not will be discussed at Session 0,
but your character will never die while you are away.
* Unless it's stupid
If all that sounds good to you, here's how I'd like you to apply :
Leave a comment here giving some small details about yourself and your experience with the game. Join my Discord channel In the general channel, post the permalink to your Roll20 comment. Private message me the permalink to your comment and I'll send you the Discord link. In the general channel, post the permalink to your Roll20 comment. Edit : Apparently they don't like off-site links here, so just follow the non-crossed-out instructions.
I'll sweep by to give you a role and interview you whenever is
convenient for both of us. If you get kicked from the server at some
point, you didn't make the cut, sorry.
Session 0 will be held the Monday or Wednesday after we have enough players.
