D&D 5e: Shadow Sorcerer's see-through Darkness spell - how to achieve it?

In D&D 5e there is a spell called Darkness, which creates a pitch-black cloud of smoke, completely obstructing all vision within. Using that spell on the map would be extremey easy - just draw a filled black circle. However, a Shadow Sorcerer can cast the Darkness in a way that allows him and only him to see through that darkness. How would I go about implementing stuff like that for him? The easiest way I think would be selective visiblity of shapes, but if there's a feature like that in r20, I wasn't able to find it.
There's really no great way of handling this. If you are a Plus or Pro sub you can use Dynamic Lighting in this way: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1562553/dynamic-lighting-magical-darkness#post-7124113
