marquee zoom

It would be cool to see a  marquee zoom feature for maps, as an additional option.
Anybody agree with this? Wouldn't you like to use the scroll wheel to zoom, or do a quick marquee zoom on an area of a large map? The one zoom control we have does not zoom in and out from the selected point in a way that is useful to a quick change in perspective "height".  Anybody?
I agree, the zoom at this moment is not useful. Also, if zooming preserved view center it would be much better.
Yes, absolutely. I'd love to simply zoom-scroll out using my mouse wheel while maintaining "view center"

Thank you for the +1s! Let's get this thread noticed!
Yes, right now zooming is clunky and easy steps are more likely to use browser zoom which affects everything and kinda defeats the purpose of zooming. Being able to specify where you zoom to would be very helpful.

If anybody wants to know how quick zoom and faster (centered) selection could work better in Roll20, just check out Maptool. I still prefer Roll20, mind you, and I was a backer, but this is one feature I will continue to harp on because it makes the DM's job faster.

So how do you get a suggestion "officially" noticed these days?
Dan Cross said: So how do you get a suggestion "officially" noticed these days?  Theres a lot of really good suggestions.  I would imagine it's really hard to keep spouting out the same answer in response, but I would bet a whole paycheck that the devs read the forums everyday, probably every couple hours.  It's one of the reasons I became as supporter.  If I really wanted to push a suggestion I would become a Mentor level supporter, use the Mentor forum to communicate more directly with the devs, and be really polite.  And get a bunch of other people to become Mentor supporters and have them singing the same song.
I have no idea what marquee zoom means but the current zoom took is pretty bad. Max zoom 150 % isn't enough and changing between zoom-levels takes way too much time to be used constantly. I just try to find a compromise level where everything is a bit akward but everything "works". So +1 to better zoom.

In at least one context Marquee zoom can be defined as the type of zoom where you click on an object and you zoom into that object. You can experience this in any PDF by opening the pdf, right clicking and selecting marquee zoom. Then you can click on the pdf and it will zoom in.  - Gauss
Ok. It's probably a made up term for that specific context like hyperthreading is Intel's way of saying multithreading.
I would like Roll20 to zoom in and out based on the position of my mouse cursor when using alt + scrollwheel.
Yeah, "marquee zoom" is a term used in Adobe Reader (and I think Photoshop for their cropping), but I just mean the ability to select an area and zoom in by that method. I also like the idea of zooming in and out based on position of mouse cursor when using alt + scrollwheel. Maptools does something like that now.
Oh, and to "InterestCurve", everything you said makes perfect sense. I plan on paying a monthly fee once I game once a week or more. ;-)

We read a lot of the stuff on the forums, but we're more likely to have an active discussion about things that are in active development, which is basically what's on the Dev server and in the Mentor forums. So we certainly read everything (like this thread), and file it away to give us a general idea of what the community wants, but in terms of what are we going to really jump in and see rapid movement on? Mostly the stuff that we're already actively developing.   One way to think of it: we have a to-do list at this point literally a mile long, full of stuff like this that people want. We can only actively work on a small portion of that at once. So rather than just running around all the time trying to discuss a wide array of things, we try and force ourselves to stay focused on the "next thing"...otherwise we'd never get anything done. That "next thing" is always what's on Dev and what we're talking about and gathering feedback on with Mentors. That said, there's some zoom improvements that went out in today's update, and we're working on the Dev server right now on some new zoom tools (although a "marquee" tool isn't one of them right now).
Thanks Riley,  Good info on the Mentor level from you and from InterestCurve. :-). Thanks for a great product.
I just read the note in the most recent update: "The zoom tool has been slightly re-worked, now when you use the Alt+Scrollwheel zoom or the zoom drop-down, it should try to keep you at least somewhat centered on the same location" Awesome. Thanks!
