Tutorial Broken

April 28 (6 years ago)

I'm a new user trying to learn from the tutorial.  I've had a number of problems, some more problematic than others.

The first problem I ran into concerned the use of "fill" of a drawing.  I could not get that to work at all.  There didn't seem to be any way to fill the area just drawn with any color.  The instructions didn't work.

The second problem I ran into was the fact that the tutorial only had a "next" function and no "back" function.  I wanted to go back and look at previous blocks but there didn't seem to be a way to go "back" to the previous instruction text.

The third problem I ran into was in measuring distances.  The tutorial told me that by using the spacebar I could measure distances moved and there was something about moving an object around without placing it and measuring the distance from the original point.  Well, when I moved an object and tried to use spacebar to measure the distance the objksect was moved, I got a secondary box that popped up telling me that spacebar was no longer the correct thing to type and it was changed to "x".  While that was all well and good, there was other stuff there that I could not get back to again (see previous comment about "back").  And moving an object without setting it down did not show me the distance the object was moved from its original point no matter whether I just moved it, moved it and hit spacebar or moved it and hit "x".  The only distance that was measured was from the last placement to the new placement.

Finally, and the more serious of the problems I ran into, is that in the section about layers, the tutorial had me search for dungeon tiles and move that onto the grid.  Well, I did that.  But no matter which dungeon tile I selected, and moved, it only appeared as a token.  The system never recognized it as a map grid.  And, yes, I did select "maps, tiles and textures" in the drop down menu.  What was worse was that the tutorial then went on to explain "ping" and "shift-ping" and asked me to ping or shift-ping a location in order to continue with the tutorial and, well, since the tile was only a token and not a map tile, "ping" did not work and the tutorial just would not continue.

It looks like the tutorial hasn't been updated in a long while, and needs an overhaul.

I don't know if this is an appropriate place to post this but I'm hoping the right people see it and can fix the problems.  I'd like to learn how to use the system but the tutorial has numerous problems that make it difficult, if not impossible, to learn using the tutorial.

Thanks for listening...

I've given up on the tutorial until someone says it's been fixed.  Trying to proceed from the last place I was, just doesn't work.  The tutorial section on the "dice gui" doesn't work, there's no "chat" window to roll dice and dice rolls don't produce a value, and there's no way to drag-and-drop dice that don't appear... and if you click "disable" accidentally, nothing at all happens and there's no way to reset it.

Additionally, there tutorial boxes that sometimes appear off-screen so I don't know what they say.

The tutorial is broken... badly...

Hello Saul J.,

Thank you for reporting these issues with tutorial. The devs are aware of issues with the tutorial. It is on their to-do list for a complete overhaul. I have also passed this information along to the devs.

Unfortunately, we do not have a time frame for when fix for the tutorial will be released. As soon as it is, Roll20 will make it known.

We hope this information helps.

Well, it helps to the extent of telling me that it's broken and you're aware of it.  It doesn't help me to learn the system so I can run a game.  Any suggestions?

I have some suggestions I hope will put you on the right track!

1) Create a game and experiment with the interface. Think of things you'd like to be able to do and try to do them.

2) Ask questions here on the forum. We're a helpful community and there are many of us that look forward to answering questions and helping new and experienced users alike.

3) Look for Roll20 how to videos on YouTube

4) Read the wiki in the sections you are having difficulty with, or are interested in.

5) Join a new player friendly pick up game and talk to the other users.

No questions are too small, ask away! =D

Saul, I just went through the learning curve myself... The docs and tutorials here are weak, but the people in the forums are extremely helpful and welcoming, and the videos official and unofficial on YouTube are really helpful.

For what it's worth, if you keep a running list of things you wanted to do and didn't find obvious, I'd like to know because I'm cleaning up parts of the wiki to help the next guy... At least for playing Savage Worlds here. There seems to be lots of D&D material.

You're going to have a bag of holding's worth of fun here. The service is free so you can allocate your money to buying cool art and animations. (That's my plan anyway.)
