Is there a specific mobile version that is unlocked if I pay, or is it just the normal version? Is there any way to try it beforehand to make sure it works? This would be extremely useful to me IF it works.

That covers all but "Is there any way to try it beforehand to make sure it works?". Or some screenshots or something? I don't like paying for a mystery box.
To my knowledge there is no try before you buy. But there may be some way that I am unaware of. Perhaps Nolan can help. I will direct him to this thread. - Gauss

ipad 3. I tried it in chrome with "request desktop site" and it didn't work well at all, so I'm hoping the mobile version is better before I clunk down cash.
