Role playing through chat?

Hi guys! I was thinking about playing D&D or other role playing games for a while now and eventually found your community. The only problem I have is my poor English 'speaking' skills. I have no problem with writing/reading/listening, but my accent makes it for quite a difficult experience. So is it normal for some players to use chat-rooms instead of skype? Or would it become a problem when looking for a group?

There are games run on Roll20 that don't use voice chat. Typically if you're looking through the LFG tool or forums, a game that is expecting to use text only will have that mentioned in the game description.

What Kristin said (there are some games listed as "text only" or "chat based"). One that I've seen come up on Roll20 is under Basic D&D or Other Games and they use Basic Fantasy RPG. Of course your best option is to look in LFG for games where the GM has announced text-only in the description like that, but there may be other options around too. There are sometimes games where the GM is the only person talking, and the players type their actions. There are sometimes games where many players use voice but the GM accommodates an individual player to use chat-only by your request. You can write it in your Player Profile bio, just as you explained it in the Original Post above. You can ask your same question in any Looking For Game listing, or include your explanation in your application, if the GM didn't say in the game description.

Thanks for the responses, you definitely gave me options to think about! I had no idea theres so many possibilities, gonna have to consider what suits me and people I would play with best :)
I am a player in such a game like you described, and it definitely works well and there is a interest for games like this! The only real downside is that takes quite a bit longer to accomplish things (which you can counteract with macros and what-not to some degree, but not entirely). But that's not really a problem I think. Good luck finding a game!

The other thing is that you can (if the gm and the group is cool with it) is turn it into a play by post in between sessions that would then allow the game to never stop at the end of the session.
my one ring group is mostly voice but a few players use text. good luck in finding a group.
