Automatic numbering of tokens

Hi, I don't know if this is at all possible, but I use Roll20 with players actually sitting around a table. To track the initiative, status effects and damage assigned to individual creatures when my party is fighting a number of identical creatures (six skeletons, for instance) I number the creatures to track them. So Skeleton 1, Skeleton 2 etc. My players also use these as shorthand when informing me which creature they want to move to, attack etc. (e.g. "I move next to no. 1 and attack it" or "which skeleton looks to have taken the most damage, is it no. 4?"). However: it's a huge chore both in pre-prepared and especially during random encounters adding numbered name plates to these creatures. Creating the token, editing the name plate, hitting show name plate. Is there a way to automate this process? Or failing that: a simple way to assign a number to a token (visible to all players) that doesn't involve the name plate? Thanks in advance!

I use the API script TokenNameNumber

Making a change to something on the tabletop (nameplate, status icon, etc.) requires the API. TokenNameNumber is probably exactly what you are looking for, but it would require a Pro subscription. "Show Name Plate" however, is something anyone can do by editing their Campaign Settings page and then applying with the Experimental feature "Apply Campaign Defaults" while in-game. It won't affect default tokens already existent in the game (dragged from journals), but will work for any tokens already deployed, new ones created, or new ones dragged in from a compendium.

While not a way to automate anything, an alternative to changing the name plate that I used to use is to give them one of the colored dot icons. If you hover over the dot, let's say the red one, then press a number on your keyboard you'll get the icon with a number over it. You can number the icons up to 9 and then use a different color if you have more than that. So if you have less than 9 skeletons they can still be "skeleton 1" or "skeleton 5", and you when you have more than 9 it'll be "red 4" or "blue 2". I found it much faster than renaming.

That's how I used to do it before I  became a Pro subscriber after 1 year of free use.
Thanks for your replies everybody! Unfortunately I only have a Plus subscription, not a Pro subscription.  The numbering of the colored dots is a neat trick, I suppose that'll have to do. Not perfect, better than what I did before :)
