I put a lot of work into this encounter and felt like showing it off! My players enter the Plaguelands hoping to get a spellscar and have to fight this monstrous worm that dives in and out of the earth. I made all the assets though the map uses photo textures. The worm itself was highly mobile and had three pieces that were attackable. When one of the monster's pieces was taken out, it would lose some of its special abilities, but the pieces were still living until all 3 pieces were at 0hp. This encounter featured heavy use of random tables, given the chaotic nature of the plaguelands. One table consisted of environmental effects. It gave me the opportunity to make some crazy magical weather and hazards thrown into combat. Some of those environmental hazards included: A hole in the earth opens up with gnashing teeth (And attempted to bite our monk's foot off) Slimy black vines writhe out of the ground and latch on to nearby people and objects (And harassed some NPCs the players love to hate) Portions of the ground melt into non-newtonian fluid (And our bard and paladin got stuck in it) But the main focus of this encounter was getting spellscars. Players would interact with the pools of magic trying to get scarred. I'd roll to determine if they got one, and if not it would also have random effects on them, but I made those up on the fly instead of using a table. The spellscar table had a lot of work put into it. I originally made an offsite generator for it, but then I found it was easy enough to make the generator in game. The generator notes a location for the scar, an effect, a visual effect for activation of the ability, and an emotional trigger. Each of those outputs had it's own table and they were combined by a macro, so all I needed to do is select a token and hit a button: -------------------------------- Spellscar for @{selected|token_name} The spellplague marks you on your [[1t[bodypart]]]. Your new spellscar [[1t[SCAR-Ability]]]. This spellscar appears as [[1t[SCAR-visual]]]. The ability will sometimes activate when you feel [[1t[SCAR-trigger]]]. -------------------------------- So long story short, now I'm hooked on tables. I love making encounters with cool random elements so this will be the first of many encounters with tables integrated in 8) If you were curious spellscars my players got: Allanah (Drow Monk): The spellplague marks you on your Forehead. Your new spellscar allows you to bind creatures or objects together in blue tethers. This spellscar appears as blue freckles that shimmer when active. The ability will sometimes activate when you feel loneliness. Carlino (Human Mage): The spellplague marks you on your Forehead. Your new spellscar makes you turn into blue fire. This spellscar appears as a glowing sigil that floats over your forehead when active. The ability will sometimes activate when you feel pain. Kallevar (Tiefling Ranger): The spellplague marks you on your Back. Your new spellscar makes your bones very brittle. This spellscar appears as blackened patches of skin. The ability will sometimes activate when you feel boredom. Syd (Drow Bard): The spellplague marks you on your Left Foot. Your new spellscar causes you to become completely immobile. This spellscar appears as the ground smoldering at your feet. The ability will sometimes activate when you feel jealousy. Walter (Drow Mage): The spellplague marks you on your Right Hand. Your new spellscar causes fear to creatures adjacent to you. This spellscar appears as the ground smoldering at your feet. The ability will sometimes activate when you feel anger.
