Five score and four years ago, the continent of Khorvaire prospered under the rule of the Kingdom of Galifar. But the untimely death of the king caused tension between his potential heirs. Tension turned into conflict. Conflict turned into fury. Fury turned into war … the Last War. The Kingdom of Galifar was torn apart and divided into the Five Nations. The Last War raged on for one hundred long and deadly years. No clear winner emerged. The struggle only ended when a mysterious disaster called the Day of Mourning destroyed Cyre, the largest of the Five Nations. No one knows who or what caused the Day of Mourning. Fearing another Day of Mourning within their own borders, the remaining four of the Five Nations signed an immediate and unsteady truce. The truce was signed four years ago, just days after the destruction of Cyre. For most of you, the Last War was the defining event of your life. Most of you spent your lives suffering from, hiding from, and participating in the Last War. The uneasy peace of the last four years is unusual and most of you think it cannot last long. During that long struggle and in the months afterwards, your survival was assisted by the learned teachings of Nico Agramonte, aka The Mentor. The Mentor was loyal to Cyre and became a hero without a nation. He traveled the continent and touched countless lives, including yours. Perhaps he taught you wandslinger skills. Maybe he taught you to adapt to an alien and hostile world. Most likely, you taught him something as well. To each of you, The Mentor is a comrade-in-arms, a teacher, and a friend. But The Mentor is dying, and his cancer cannot be cured by any known means, magical or otherwise. Each of you has received this news in a communication from The Mentor that has caused you to drop everything and rush to his side. Maybe you left something important behind. Maybe nothing is waiting for you when you come back. Everyone has their own story … their own past. For each of you, The Mentor is a cherished part of that past. Starting from different destinations and following different paths, the five of you found each other in an elemental galleon over Kraken Bay. You share a common destination and a common mentor. Some of you have met before, while others are strangers. By the time the magical flying ship landed in the young nation of New Galifar, the five of you had become allies and resolved to make the final part of the trip to The Mentor’s farm in Griffon Gulch together. Right now, the party is camped together in the Endworld Mountains. Griffon Gulch is two days away and you expect to spend at least one more night in the wilderness. The evening meal is done and the sun is gone. A fire lights the camp as the party merrily trades fantastic stories, friendly insults, and bawdy jokes. You’ve been together as a party for about a week. The mood is light but the party remains wary. The kobold wandslingers that call the Endworld Mountains home are not quite at war with the people of New Galifar … yet.
