Export Chat Log Feature or Show All Pages Button

Now that roll20 paginated the chatlogs, it's more important than ever to either have a export chatlogs feature or button which display the entire chatlog without needing to switch between pages (or select a page range to display all contents between said pages). It should also be mentioned that it would be fantastic if exporting chatlogs would support background printing when printing to PDF , as this used to be a function that worked fine for the longest time. Alternatively, this could be resolved by providing a search function in the chatlogs that can check for certain text, but that puts more effort on the server's end to index and find pertinent information. Before as it was previously suggested here and here , it wasn't necessary since one could simply right click and "save page as". And while that's still here, you can only get a small portion of the chatlogs as you have to go to each page by clicking on the number and then saving them or opting to print to PDF. This also prevents one from searching the chatlogs en mass for specific text that was stated, which is often times needed to be referenced for one reason or another. I think it would be better for everyone involved to simply have access to download chatlogs if they so choose to do so, as one could use software to combine chatlogs in PDF form in one "Master Chatlog" which could be indexed and then searched. Our game has been going on for a couple years now and we have something around 4,500 pages worth of chatlogs (with no margins printed to PDF)... searching for stuff that happened a while ago has been a great resource for us. I hope I've clarified all the relevant talking points regarding this issue, as while it's true the long chatlogs would certainly slow down and possibly crash the browser, we made a habit of saving and then clearing the chatlogs occasionally. Now we simply have no option to quickly export the logs at all and it becomes a more tedious process. In fact, since the change we actually have chatlogs going back almost since we started, which is strange given that we've cleared the chatlogs about 11 times or so (given my collection of individual saved HTML files). Not sure why that happened, and I'm a tad concerned that displaying all of that would crash the browser. Edit 2: I'll increase the number to the side as I update this list. Summary Review of Ideas and Improvements General Log Features: Export Log button Include background coloration. Chatlog search for text function Pagination: Show all pages button Show page ranges button Suggestion by Kraff: Oldest page listed as page one with newer pages increasing in number. Suggestion by Snipehamster: Pagination by session date played, by player, and/or Dungeon Master controlled.

Can't second this more. Game I'm in has been running for 6 years, divided so far into 3 different roll20 games (one for each story "part"), and Part 2's log became so big that it was outright impossible to load, and in the very rare cases it did load, "print as" pdf would just not work because it'd require way more RAM than I have available. The last version of the log I have saved is 4400+ pages, and there's a few months of sessions that need to added on top of it that I never managed to export. This pagination now at least makes that huge log actually load, but it's split into 207 pages. Good luck finding anything . Or saving it without taking 3 days. I also want to highlight another issue: the 1st page is the most recent content, the last page the oldest. This makes the logs of a running game even more of a mess to search, because the content of each page will change as more messages are written. If the 1st page was the oldest content, you'd be at least able to reliably figure out what each page contains. You'd be able to figure out for example that the first session of your game is inside pages 1-3, session 2 inside pages 3-7 and so on. But in the end, a real export funcion is despetarely needed.

I second everything above. This is an awful change. Players regularly Ctrl+F in the logs to locate details in the story that they may have missed, or to look back for fun scenes to re-read and share. This is now completely impossible, especially as the newest one is "page 1" meaning which page something is on will constantly change every week. A "Show All" button, or at least to divide into fewer pages would be a vast improvement. Or a search bar that would search and highlight which pages contain the search term. Right now players simply cannot look for something. It's a huge problem for them.

Thirding. New logs are a nightmare to navigate. Pagination is good in principle - the logs certainly load faster - but the new layout is both counterintuitive and unhelpful for the reasons outlined above, particularly in larger games. Would it not be better to put pagination of a given game's logs in the hands of the GM or individual players, so that they can be divided up by session (etc)?
The new chat logs could be neat as an optional feature that can be toggled on and off. But as it is right now it's just flat out terrible and a nightmare to navigate and archive. I second everything OP suggested.
Seconding everything OP suggested. This is a nightmare as someone who likes to scour game logs for from time to time, this makes actually finding things near impossible. I literally never use these forums and you somehow made me post.
Yeah, some way to search logs, or even just show the full logs on a single page, would be extremely helpful.
I'll have to throw my agreement in on needing either an Export All or "Show all" function. I regularly need to check the logs for various information, and now I'm wracking my brain to try and -guess- when an event happened rather than simply using Ctrl+F to find the data I need.  That said, this is a great improvement for people who have issues loading text heavy logs that span years. I just really need  the option to be able to search the entire log at once, even if it takes 5-10 minutes to load the log on my end.

As a partial workaround, I made a python script that downloads the chat log archives from a game (going page by page), though it downloads it into a big JSON list and you have to do a bit of scripting to get the information you want. So if you don't mind doing a bit of work, you can try the script, until the Roll20 devs give us an official solution. (it includes a simple way to search the logs for some message and find out which page it came from)
