What makes a game now?

I have been gaming for over 30 years. I have always had groups around me. I only recently moved to an area that doesn't have actual players around. What does it now days for players. Is it rules, hack n slash, rp, being played or playing politics? What is it you look for in a game now? Do you like DMs that play characters and have stories unlike anything you have thought of or do you look for the ultimate party to combat those that you shouldn't combat? Help me I am new to VTT but need to reconnect to the new line of gamers.
Since I started roleplaying back in the nineties I'm not sure I'm "new" but I'm fairly sure the tastes vary a lot these days. Personally I prefer games with some intrigue and problem-solving, politics and so on, with elements of action to break that stuff up (of course, that also means there's action and whatnot, broken up by all that social stuff, for those who like to run around and break things). As a DM I mostly try to come up with new concepts, new things to put the players through, and then see how it goes. Sometimes I create scenarios or campaigns based on the requests of an active group.
Chad, I don't think there's been a sea change in how people approach RPGs over the years.  If you peruse the LFG section, you still see people running hack 'n slash campaigns, Monty Haul campaigns, political campaigns.  There's a large enough user base here where I think you can probably run what ever campaign style you'd like to if you're willing to put in some effort on the recruitment end.  If you just want to play, you might have to wait around for a game that suits what you want to play, but given that someone wants to play Aftermath currently in the LFG section, anything is possible.

I understand where you are coming from, I have started my game, and it is going well. I just don't know where others focus, that is my point in asking that here. I got a group luckily that suits my play style from what I see, even though they play in new systems they are learning old. That is what makes me hopeful. I am looking to take my campaign and creating 2 or 3 different campaigns in the same world but I want to know the best way to do this. I know I need to change in some areas, I just want to know how people have so far.
I'm in a game right now where the GM is running 2 different campaigns in the same world but at different time periods, and I have also played in a &nbsp;game where there were 2 different groups in different areas of the world. It's always fun when there's a possibility for a crossover with another team.&nbsp; You can choose to run that in different ways, like you can run a very political group, and then another is just an out for themselves group of treasure hunters, and maybe they clash when the treasure hunters try to rob the political group's treasury. Or maybe that political group seeks some knowledge and they cross the treasure hunters in some old ruins. Leaving avenues like that open is very interesting.
