layers bug

so apparently it wont remember after i spend 3 hours on a map, what is supposed to be on top/bottom.  it takes like 15 minutes to fix it... anyone know how to make it so i dont have to put 65+ tiles back on bottom after coming back online?

To understand, are you saying it wont remember what order (front to back) the objects on a single layer are aligned in? Could you provide a before (when aligned properly) and after (when the order is incorrect) screenshot? Moving this to bug reports. - Gauss
I have had this issue myself. I have no screen shots, but what I can describe is as follows: I placed several images (boxes, crates, spiral staircase and book shelves) on top of my background map in the map layer. I then logged out, using the exit game to force a saved copy of what all I had done.. The next time I loaded up roll20 and went to that campaign/page, I found that about 1/3 of the images had vanished from sight. I clicked on the main map/background, selected move to the back, and they all reappeared infront of it. Since then, I have chosen to design any changes to my background maps in photoshop and if a player wants to MOVE said item (box/crate/bookshelf) I can always white-out the background image and place a moveable token in its place. I imagine this saves on number of handles each page/campaign needs to keep track of as well.
I have this issue as well. I place items, everything looks good, log out, come back later, random items have been moved up and down (floor on top of furniture, walls disappearing behind the background map, items ending up under the things they were resting on etc). I use Windows 7, Firefox.
Same issue as this, takes a long time to fix, using Win7 and Chrome.
yeah, what everyone else said. and gauss, what format do you recommend for the images?  btw, windows 7, chrome.

Justin, jpg is fine. Just hit Print Screen, drop it into Paint, save as JPG, and then upload it to here or to a image sharing server. - Gauss
I'm getting this too.   It seems to happen the most when I drag & drop things onto the background, but don't specify a layer.  For example, in the below screenshot I first dragged the base on, then dragged the elephant statue on.  I didn't specify a layer on either of them, but I did specify that the background should be at the back.  When I logged back in after being logged out for a while, the elephant ended up behind the base.
You just have to go in and use Send to Front / Back to arrange them as you like. Then select them all and group the objects together. Grouping objects makes it easier to fix and more likely to keep the proper order in my experience.

Reed P, I want to thank you. In all the time I have been seeing people report the z-layer bug I think this is the first time I have ever seen an actual cause. You may have just helped to solve the 'how is it happening' question. Of course, I could be mistaken and someone has reported this element before but if so I do not remember it. :) When I tried to replicate the problem I did so perfectly. However, after I organized the z-layer on purpose (to back or to front) it did not come up again.  I will update the z-layer bug report with this new information. It should help Riley fix it. Until this bug is fixed please organize the z-layer intentionally by using to front and to back after you drop a new map piece onto the table. Edit: I did further testing and it *appears* that if you hit 'to front/back' on just one object after placing new objects on the map it sets the z-layer for all objects currently on the map in the current apparent positions. Example: place 3 objects on top of each other. On the topmost object hit 'to front'. Hit reload and all 3 new objects *should* maintain z-layer positions.  - Gauss

Riley has pushed out a fix on the Dev server. When the fix is adequately tested it will be pushed to Main. Thanks for your help Reed. - Gauss
