During Session 7, the party enjoyed an evening drinking with Romance Almaraz aka Roman Deadrider (formerly Lord Almaraz) in the strange ranch house at Prosperity Fields. During your time with it, Romance explained its theory about the undead and the purpose of Prosperity Fields. He claimed the farm is fully sanctioned by King Sebastes ir'Kesslan of New Galifar. Since a couple of players missed it, here is Romance's explanation from its point of view. This is not the DM's point of view and it may contain gross inaccuracies. Enjoy! The undead are weapons created to kill the living. They are no longer needed for that purpose ... unless there is another war. Without purpose, the undead are prone to erratic behavior. They are driven by instinct, by environment, and by the influence of Dolurrh aka the Plane of the Dead. Some seek to become the identity of the person whose animated body they stole but the laws of Cyre (and New Galifar) states that they are not the person whose animated body they inhabit. Undead who cannot abandon their "old life" can be erratic and dangerous. However, destroying the undead refugees of Cyre would be wrong since they served the kingdom and may be needed again. It would be a waste of valuable weapons. Romance has convinced King Sebastes that the best and most humane policy is to detain unclaimed undead away from normal society and exploit them for endless labor. That is why Prosperity Fields was created. Using bizarre techniques created specifically to tame the undead during peace, Romance harnesses the dead to help the living. Specifically, it wants to feed the people of New Galifar and give the people access to foods that are like home (Cyre). In New Galifar, seafood is the primary diet but, in Cyre, the people dined on grains and meat, as well as seafood. The people's morale is suffering but Griffon Gulch (and Prosperity Fields) can change that. The undead at Prosperity Fields are not happy or unhappy. They have purpose and purpose is the only thing that can bring satisfaction to the dead. Rebel "Tulip" Deadeye proves Prosperity Fields is not perfect but neither is our world.
