DM, which sources we can use while creating our characters? Races from official books like Volo's Guide or Eberron etc allowed?
Yes, certainly from any official book or magazine source! You can also bring an existing character into the game, you will just need to dial it back to 1st level as if you were just starting out. I want to try and set up the module just like I have my 1E/2E game and that means making dice roll macros that come up when you click on a character token, so one does not need to fuss with the character sheets. So, I went to the forum to get info on the sheet macro templates. The first response I got was to basically, just leave it as is. Sigh. I am very surprised that "Lost Mines of Phandelver", is basically just a half finished adventure module. I still needed to buy user created maps that were missing and look for token images for NPC's that do not have one. There are encounters that they didn't even set up, as well. I found a short intro to add that starts the game briefly in Neverwinter, itself.
I finally get at least on here enough to message you all using the Mom’s iPad! The internet has been wonky here as well either working or not and the Mom’s BF did not bring his laptop! I will be back late Saturday night so there should be a game next week where from my own Alienware computer! So sorry about not being able to get on here at all last night! I also was not able to use discord. Buddy is the last player to join the game and there should be 6 players. So for this week just role play around with Buddy introducing his character in the driftwood tavern! I will see if I can change the map to the 1st floor of the tavern. Next week we will start the actual adventuring!
Ok, I can not move the little red player flag from the dock map to the tavern map! It just gets all wonky when I try to do so. So it stays on the north shore dock map until I get back late Saturday night. Now to see if I can clear out the chat archive.
Ok the chat is cleared out now.
Ok, looks like I will have to open the game for 3 new players to join. The game will start on October 26th. In the meantime the players can do a quick role play session this Saturday morning, the 19th, at 10 am eastern time, (Pittsburgh , Pa time). Buddy is in New York for a Veterans’ electronics convention, so I do not know if he can come in this Saturday.
I am back in Pittsburgh, after being in Deerfield Beach, Florida for a week! I can come online and help out with things or you help me out as I learn 5th Edition.
Just a reminder to Buddy, Kath and Kore, to please get their character sheets filled out!
Right! The other threads aren’t loading for me (bad connection) what level and just a standard pdf of the character sheet or use a website like dndbeyond?
how are yall
Hi Buddy! Doing fine here! Kore, if you already have a character sheet you can simply transfer it over into this game. You may need to simply adjust it back to 1st level if it already is not. You can use Roll20's Charactermancer to create the sheet as well. Of course you can use D&D Beyond to make a sheet then just copy the info over into the roll20 sheet.
Hiya Buddy!
Gotcha! And hi Buddy!
I need token/avatar images for, Buddy, Fshnurb, Kore M, and Punished (P)ooni's Characters!
I'll be getting onto that in a few hours!
Ok, now we just need token / avatar images from Buddy & Kore M for their characters!
Ok, Just a couple of Reminders here: 1) Make sure you post your availability for tomorrow morning's (10am ET) Game Session! Here: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/7827567/game-attendance-are-you-going-to-be-there 2) We still need Token / Avatar Character Images for Buddy's and Kore M's Characters! So, either link me up to the image or place them in yourself. Depending on the image I can make round tokens or transparent background ones.
Some information on the Driftwood Tavern that the characters frequent, (also seen as a Handout in the game): An inn and tavern that caters mainly to longtime locals, tile Driftwood Tavern takes pride in having kept its doors open since before the Spellplague. When the cataclysm struck, innkeeper Madame Rosene, a serious woman now in her late fifties, sheltered refugees within her walls. The Driftwood offered people a makeshift city hall and gathering place during the troubled years. Madame Rosene and her regulars have filled the inside of the tavern with bric-a-brac, curios, and relics of Neverwinter before its fall. The statue from a favorite fountain stands in a corner. A wine seller’s planter boxes, filled with flowers, brighten tile walls. Knobs and knockers from a noble’s estate are attached to the front doors. Ornate doors pulled from the wreckage make fine tables, and unbroken panes of stained glass hang overhead as chandeliers, lit by hundreds of carefully placed candles. Though the decorations have been salvaged from all over the city, the tavern does not feel junky, and no one thinks Madame Rosene is taking advantage of Neverwinter’s fall. Quite the opposite-the Driftwood is considered a monument to old Neverwinter, like a dusty painting of a beautiful girl hanging above the deathbed of an aged noblewoman. Prices for room and board at the tavern are high. The atmosphere is one of quiet reflection, rather than boisterous merriment. The Mintarn mercenaries stay away, preferring to eat and drink at the Moonstone Mask or sorne other cheaper place. Visitors to the city stop at the Driftwood to marvel at the museum of objects, or to learn about old Neverwinter from Madame Rosene for the (expensive) price of a drink and a meal. Only longtime customers and old friends come to the Driftwood regularly.
Weekly Game Session Reminder - Saturday, October 26th, 2019 - 10:00 am EDT - 5E: Lost Mines of Phandelver Just a Note to remind you all that there is a Live Adventure Gaming Session Today starting at 10am ET - 7am PT - 3pm BT! As far as we know, Kath B, and Punished (P)oonii are able to play! We have not heard from, Akis G, Buddy, Kore M, and Fshnurb, as they have not posted anything yet!
We had a great first session today! Three folks were able to make it: Fshnurb, Kath B & Punished (P)oonii! I am heading up to the Sister's today to celebrate my Mom's Upcoming Birthday, so I will edit down the chat archive tomorrow to post up a story chapter and weekly gaming summary.
I was able to tinker around with the Emote & Say Something Macros and the result is shown below!
We had a 50% turnout last time, so would it be possible to get a post from everyone who is still interested in this game?
I had sent out private messages to those that could not attend the last session. Buddy, was thinking the game was 9pm (central time), in the evening, when no one was here, so I told him it was in the morning. If I don't hear anything from the other two sometime after dinner my time, I will likely boot them however if they notify me, they still intend to play, I will send them a new invite link. Otherwise, two player spots will open up for new people. I did set up a discord page: https://discord.gg/D7ZzbT
Discord link is expired. Might want to add one that doesn't.
I did click on it so as to not expire so that is weird. Will try it again: Here: https://discord.gg/EMbCNgj

Ok, just thought I would make a post about how 5th Edition D&D Surprise Rolls and Death Save Rolls are done then make a comparison to Advanced D&D does it: 5E Surprise Roll Checks: Make a Dexterity (Stealth) check for the goblins, rolling once for all of them. Open the goblin 's Character Journal and select the tab to view its character sheet. Under Skills, click on the d20 icon beside the Stealth skill to roll it. Compare the result to the characters’ passive Wisdom (Perception) scores. Any character whose score is lower than the goblins’ check result is surprised and loses his or her turn during the first round of combat (see “Surprise” in the Starter Set rulebook). AD&D has each side roll a 1D6, typically you are surprised on a 1 or 2, lower for elves or certain classes, the gap between the two rolls is the number of lost segments of action for the surprised victim. ========== Death Saves: Falling Unconscious If damage reduces you to 0 hit points and fails to kill you, you fall unconscious (see appendix A). This unconsciousness ends if you regain any hit points. Unconsciousness, Death Saving Throws, Stabilizing: Whenever you start your turn with 0 hit points, you must make a special saving throw, called a death saving throw, to determine whether you creep closer to death or hang onto life. Unlike other saving throws, this one isn’t tied to any ability score. You are in the hands of fate now, aided only by spells and features that improve your chances of succeeding on a saving throw. Roll a d20. If the roll is 10 or higher, you succeed. Otherwise, you fail. A success or failure has no effect by itself. On your third success, you become stable (see below). On your third failure, you die. The successes and failures don’t need to be consecutive; keep track of both until you collect three of a kind. The number of both is reset to zero when you regain any hit points or become stable. Rolling 1 or 20. When you make a death saving throw and roll a 1 on the d20, it counts as two failures. If you roll a 20 on the d20, you regain 1 hit point. Damage at 0 Hit Points. If you take any damage while you have 0 hit points, you suffer a death saving throw failure. If the damage is from a critical hit, you suffer two failures instead. If the damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum, you suffer instant death. Stabilizing a Creature The best way to save a creature with 0 hit points is to heal it. If healing is unavailable, the creature can at least be stabilized so that it isn’t killed by a failed death saving throw. You can use your action to administer first aid to an unconscious creature and attempt to stabilize it, which requires a successful DC 10 Wisdom (Medicine) check. A stable creature doesn’t make death saving throws, even though it has 0 hit points, but it does remain unconscious. The creature stops being stable, and must start making death saving throws again, if it takes any damage. A stable creature that isn’t healed regains 1 hit point after 1d4 hours. ========== In AD&D: Zero Hit Points: When any creature is brought to 0 hit points (optionally as low as –3 hit points if from the same blow which brought the total to 0), it is unconscious. In each of the next succeeding rounds 1 additional (negative) point will be lost until –10 is reached and the creature dies. Such loss and death are caused from bleeding, shock, convulsions, non-respiration, and similar causes. It ceases immediately on any round a friendly creature administers aid to the unconscious one. Aid consists of binding wounds, starting respiration, administering a draught (spirits, healing potion, etc.), or otherwise doing whatever is necessary to restore life. Any character brought to 0 (or fewer) hit points and then revived will remain in a coma for 1-6 turns. Thereafter, he or she must rest for a full week, minimum. He or she will be incapable of any activity other than that necessary to move slowly to a place of rest and eat and sleep when there. The character cannot attack, defend, cast spells, use magic devices, carry burdens, run, study, research, or do anything else. This is true even if cure spells and/or healing potions are given to him or her, although if a heal spell is bestowed the prohibition no longer applies. If any creature reaches a state of –6 or greater negative points before being revived, this could indicate scarring or the loss of some member, if you so choose. For example, a character struck by a fireball and then treated when at –9 might have horrible scar tissue on exposed areas of flesh — hands, arms, neck, face. You would typically roll a wisdom check or a Healing/first aid non-weapon proficiency skill check to try to stop the bleeding. If you fail the victim loses 1 hit point the next round
And here it is about Short Rest & Long Rest in D&D 5E and the AD&D Comparison: Short Rest A short rest is a period of downtime, at least 1 hour long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous than eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds. A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character’s level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total (minimum of 0). The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. A character regains some spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest, as explained below. Long Rest A long rest is a period of extended downtime, at least 8 hours long, during which a character sleeps for at least 6 hours and performs no more than 2 hours of light activity, such as reading, talking, eating, or standing watch. If the rest is interrupted by a period of strenuous activity— at least 1 hour of walking, fighting, casting spells, or similar adventuring activity—the characters must begin the rest again to gain any benefit from it. At the end of a long rest, a character regains all lost hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up to a number of dice equal to half of the character’s total number of them (minimum of one die). For example, if a character has eight Hit Dice, he or she can regain four spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest. A character can’t benefit from more than one long rest in a 24-hour period, and a character must have at least 1 hit point at the start of the rest to gain its benefits. ========== AD&D Resting: Recovery of Hit Points: When a character loses hit points in combat or to some other attack form (other than being drained of life energy levels), there are a number of different means by which such points can be restored. Clerics and paladins are able to restore such losses by means of spells or innate abilities. Magical devices such as potions operate much the same way, and a ring of regeneration will cause automatic healing and revitalization in general of its wearer. Commonly it is necessary to resort to the passage of time, however, to restore many characters to full hit point strength. For game purposes it is absolutely necessary that the character rest in order to recuperate, i.e. any combat, spell using, or similar activity does not constitute rest, so no hit points can be regained. For each day of rest a character will regain 1 hit point, up to and including 7 days. However a character with a penalty for poor constitution must deduct weekly the penalty score from his or her days of healing, i.e., a –2 for a person means that 5 hit points healing per week is maximum, and the first two days of rest will restore no hit points. After the first week of continuous rest, characters with a bonus for high constitution add the bonus score to the number of hit points they recover due to resting, i.e., the second week of rest will restore 11 (7 + 4) hit points to a fighter character with an 18 constitution. Regardless of the number of hit points a character has, 4 weeks of continuous rest will restore any character to full strength.
Ok, I think i have the current map working now. I went into the map as a player and the spot where the characters are is lit up from the magical hooded lantern that Wuth is using. Someone else has the other magical hooded lantern. Note it is not night outside yet, but with the way the map is set up, That's how you will see for now. I noticed I needed to place all the monster/npc tokens on the map on the DM Layer so that they are not revealed. WotC only had some of them on the DM Layer. I may try also using advanced fog of war, however this could lead to a slow down on some of your computers.
Sounds good to me Ricky I think I will use the macros you made instead of my sheet since no one else can see my rolls except me, if Myriandor makes it high enough I will get some spells, as I recall in 5e damage from spells goes up as you gain levels usually doubles then triples after 5 levels
what are y'all doing on this fine Sunday?

There is a blank character sheet with your name on it in the 'Player Characters (PCs)' folder in the game area when you click on the Launch game button. Click on the newspaper looking icon above the chatbox and you will find the folder there. Or click on 'Tools' then 'Character Vault' to transfer a sheet you made into the game.
