Scene: Neverwinter City – North Dock – The Driftwood Tavern An inn and
tavern that caters mainly to longtime locals, tile Driftwood Tavern takes pride in
having kept its doors open since before the Spellplague.
When the cataclysm struck, innkeeper Madame Rosene, a
serious woman now in her late fifties, sheltered refugees
within her walls. The Driftwood offered people a makeshift city
hall and gathering place during the troubled years. Madame Rosene and her regulars
have filled the inside of the tavern with bric-a-brac,
curios, and relics of Neverwinter before its fall. The statue from
a favorite fountain stands in a corner. A wine seller’s planter boxes,
filled with flowers, brighten tile walls. Knobs and
knockers from a noble’s estate are attached to the front
doors. Ornate doors pulled from the wreckage make fine
tables, and unbroken panes of stained glass hang overhead as
chandeliers, lit by hundreds of carefully placed candles. Though the decorations have been
salvaged from all over the city, the tavern does not feel junky,
and no one thinks Madame Rosene is taking advantage of
Neverwinter’s fall. Quite the opposite-the Driftwood is considered a
monument to old Neverwinter, like a dusty painting of a
beautiful girl hanging above the deathbed of an aged noblewoman. Prices for room and board at the
tavern are high. The atmosphere is one of quiet
reflection, rather than boisterous merriment. The Mintarn
mercenaries stay away, preferring to
eat and drink at the Moonstone Mask or sorne other cheaper place. Visitors to the
city stop at the Driftwood to marvel at the museum of
objects, or to learn about old Neverwinter from Madame Rosene
for the (expensive) price of a drink and a meal. Only longtime customers and old
friends come to the Driftwood regularly. The party enters the Drifwood Tavern for their usual Saturday
morning breakfast get-together and remove and place their weapons into the
foyer to the side of the entrance. As they enter they are greeted by the barmaid Shandra
Brennick, whom tells the party that their friend, Sildar Hallwinter, has a
dwarf friend with him that he wants the group to meet. They pass by the bar area to see Madame Rosene, the
owner, busy with other customers. Madame Rosene, nods in acknowledgement of the
party’s greetings as they pass by, to a corner area of the tavern where Sildar
and his dwarf friend are sitting at a table. Sildar, waving for them to come on
over. After morning greetings to each other, Sildar
Hallwinter, introduced the dwarf fellow as Gundren Rockseeker, who wanted to
meet the party, as they were recommended by Sildar, for a job. Gundren Rockseeker, then tells the party, he needs
folks to help with getting a supply wagon down to the to town of Phandalin, a couple days journey away,
offering 10 gold coins a piece for the job. But first Gundred wanted to size up the party, so he
has Sildar take them outside to demonstrate their ability to defend themselves
and attack. Arnie the lightfoot Halfling, went first demonstrating
her longbow and axe throwing skills, targeting his shield, Sildar then knocking
them away. Sildar then tests her defense, swinging his great club at her, as
she tries to dodge and Sildar pulls the blow short so it doesn’t strike. Gerjio the Tortle, goes next, displaying his
shortsword skills. Sildar then moves to attack with his long sword as Gerjio,
defly dodges the strike. Vin the Changeling, is next and displays her spell
casting skills, using wild magic, a Chaos Bolt is cast, which surprises Sildar,
having not known she knew the spell. The sound of thunder reverberating off his
shield, knocking him back. Arnie and Vin make Insight rolls at this point, trying
to gauge what Sildar might be thinking. Arnie rolls an 18, the result being that she believes
Sildar is impressed with what she demonstrated. Vin rolled an 11, the result being that Sildar seems
mildly impressed with her martial abilities, but there seems to be something
else that he is mulling over. Sildar, walks over to each of them placing a finger
over their heart, asking each one to convince him that they have what it takes
to do the job. At this point, they can try to deceive, intimidate or persuade,
Sildar as they say something to him. Arnie didn’t really have or know of what to say and
that was OK with Sildar. Vin tries to intimidate rolling a 23, indicating
Sildar was surely so. Gerjio tries to persuade rolling an 8. Sildar just
acknowledges with a nod. Sildar then moves over to Gundren whom was watching
the whole exchange and they have a short discussion. They both walk back over to the party and Sildar tells
them Gundren believes they are up to the task. Gundren, whom was impressed, then ups the offer to 15
gold coins for each person. Vin tries another insight roll, to get a feel for if
Gundren, would be willing to go higher than the new offer of 15 gold coins
each, rolling a 21. Vin gets the feeling that is all they are going to get. Gundren then proceeds to give the group, instructions,
telling them to report to the Shiprite Warehouse first thing in the morning,
where the owner Berk Weatherhouse, will have the supply wagon ready to go. Gundren informs the party that Sildar and him, are
leaving for Phandalin, today, ahead of the party. They are to drop off the supply wagon at the trading
post, Berthen’s Provisions, then meet up with Sildar & Gruden at the
Stonehill Inn, where they will be staying. Gundren tells the party, that along with his brothers
Nundro and Tharden, they came upon, ‘something big’, and he wants to get the
supplies safely to Phandalin. The next day, the party arrives at the Shiprite
Warehouse and meet Berk Weatherhouse, in the office area. Berk then takes the party into the warehouse and shows
them the supply wagon with two of the best oxen hitched to it, fully loaded and
ready to go. Berk then moves the wagon outside, asking if they have all their
personal belongings they wanted to bring, before they set off. Gerjio, gets on the wagon to steer it and they move
off, leaving the city of Neverwinter and travel southward along the Sword coast
road, called the High Road, about a day and a bit more travel before turning
eastward onto the Triboar Trail. Suddenly, the two Oxen, pulling the supply wagon stop
in their tracks, not wanting to go farther! And that ends the live gaming
session for the day until next time! Number of Sessions for current
