Ch. 3: From the High Road to the Triboar Trail, Dead Bodies and a Goblin Ambush!

Vin: You ready, Ricky?   Myriandor: Lets get going   Dungeon Master (GM): Yes i am ready, so let's get started   Wuth Nonvul: Lets-a-go!   Opening Scene: In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named  Gundren Rockseeker  asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to  Barthen’s Provisions , a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named  Sildar Hallwinter , claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.” You’ve spent the last couple days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, approximately a 50 mile trip, traveling about a 4 mph pace and you’ve just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You’ve encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.     Dungeon Master (GM): We last left off when the Oxen driving the cart suddenly stopped in their tracks, on the Triboar Trail, refusing to go any farther!   Myriandor: Myriandor starts to look around for any threats 7 | 12 PERCEPTION  (1) Myriandor   Wuth Nonvul: I will dismount from the cart, approach the oxen, and give a reassuring pat of their rumps.   Vin: "Ey! What's the hold-up? We're never going to get anywhere if we have to keep stopping."   Buddy D.: 6 | 12 PERCEPTION  (4) Paco Bedo   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, just looking around the perimeter you do not notice anything out of the ordinary, same for Buddy ok, Oxen calms down a bit   Wuth Nonvul: I call out into the wilderness "Anyone there? We are harmless".   Dungeon Master (GM): looking else where while dismounted Wuth?   Wuth Nonvul: Sure I'll take a look as well.   Dungeon Master (GM): Nothing other than a gentle breeze responds back   Wuth Nonvul: 3 | 9 PERCEPTION  (2)   Dungeon Master (GM): where else are you looking please be specific   Wuth Nonvul: Just towards where I was calling out to. I wouldn't see anything though.   Vin: "There's nothing there, you hair-raised kittens. Just handle your animals."   Dungeon Master (GM): all you see is trees and brush blowing in the wind, and Myriandor is that where you move to?   Buddy D.: wrong button 17 | 8 INVESTIGATION  (3) Paco Bedo   Myriandor: Yes I will grab a hold of the yoke and try to pull it forward   Buddy D.: i investigate the area   Dungeon Master (GM): where are you investigating buddy? where specifically? oh you find nothing there   Vin pats the oxen and urges it, since their companions are prancing around, fleeing from shadows.   Vin: 20 | 5 ANIMAL HANDLING  (0) Vin     Myriandor: 13 | 9 STRENGTH  (2) Myriandor   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, Vin tries to calm the oxen while, Myriandor tugs at the oxen and they still don’t really budge but your foot slips trying to pull them forward and a dexterity check is now needed for Myriandor!   Myriandor: 11 | 9 DEXTERITY  (0) Myriandor   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, as you tried to pull the oxen forward the ground gives way in front of Myriandor, but you were able to keep your footing thinks to having both hands on the oxen's reins   Dungeon Master (GM): it seems part of the ground before you reveals a hole   Myriandor: Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "FOUND SOMETHING!!"   Dungeon Master (GM): the oxen were startled a bit when Myriandor almost slipped but Vin calms them down   Wuth Nonvul takes out his longsword and begins to prod the road in front of him, attempting to reveal all the pits   Dungeon Master (GM): a closer look, it appears that foliage covered in dirt from the road, is over a hole as Wuth does so, you see a gnome, a Tymoran priest from the looks of his robes lying on the floor of a pit in a pool of blood, with several arrows in him!   Myriandor: How deep is the hole?   Buddy D.: how deep is the pit   Dungeon Master (GM): looks to be about 10 ft deep and 6 ft wide   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): I attempt to discern how old the corpse is.   Dungeon Master (GM): the sides are actually not so steep that one could not easily climb out   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): 3 INVESTIGATION  (2) Why does this keep happening, 2/2.   Dungeon Master (GM): Wuth could not determine how long the body laid there
Vin snorts as they peer over the hole and idly take on the priest's form. "Unlucky little guy. We'd better get moving though."   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): I continue on with prodding the road, trying to find any more pits.   Vin tries to guide the now-calmed oxen around the hole.   Myriandor: Myriandor will climb down into the pit   Dungeon Master (GM): ok myriandor does go into the pit   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): Wait. What!?   Myriandor: 11 | 16 ATHLETICS  (4) Myriandor   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, you don't stumble getting in you are closer to the body now, so having a look at it?   Myriandor: Yes looking it over   Dungeon Master (GM): ok well you do find his holy symbol of Tymora, hung around his neck. On the back of it is engraved in fancy letters "Y Y". You also find a small bead in the dead priest's pockets and his quarterstaff.   Vin: 19 | 3 ANIMAL HANDLING  (0) Vin (Damn! Vin should retire and become a druid!)   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, Vin what are you doing with the oxen now?   Vin is getting them to move down the road and guiding them around the hole.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, you do so Vin. Do you take the holy symbol of Tymora and bead?   Myriandor: Anything special about the bead? Whats it made of?   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, the bead actually feels like it is made of a spongy material to you, other than that, it just looks like a bead.   Vin: (Thas' weird.)   Myriandor: Ok take the symbol, bead and quarterstaff climb out of the pit   Dungeon Master (GM): ok   Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "Rest in peace"   Wuth Nonvul offers Myriandor a hand when climbing out   Dungeon Master (GM): so do we continue on your way here with Vin guiding the oxen around the pit and Wuth continuing to probe the road in front of you all??? ok   Buddy D.: yes   Vin: (Ayep.)   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): Yes.   Buddy D.: i can follow vin to provide long range security   Dungeon Master (GM): ok let me bunch the tokens together and go to the next map   Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "The Priest has a symbol with someone's initials in it"   Vin takes a look at the symbol. "Yancy Yurusque Yacksman. Famous priestly family," they say with a straight face.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, as you continue along you come into a bit of a valley with some morning fog obscuring the path   Vin: (Pretty!)   Dungeon Master (GM): that's the Triboar trail   Myriandor: Myriandor puts the symbol in the wagon   Dungeon Master (GM): Wuth you can move your token along the path, which will also represent where the cart goes   Vin isn't doing anything, just petting the oxen that they've named Stef and Jeff.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, as Wuth and Paco go into the fog they can see a bit before them and noticed two dead horses on the ground here with several arrows stuck in them!   Myriandor: (Myriandor has her greatsword resting on her shoulder as she walks along)   Dungeon Master (GM): Each horse has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.   Wuth Nonvul yells out a warning to the rest of the party "Dead horses, arrows in them. Likely bandits"   Buddy D.: 19 | 21 INVESTIGATION  (3) Paco Bedo   Vin takes a squint through the fog. "Ah... Jesse and Bessy... Good horses, good horses indeed! Pity of pities!"   Buddy D.: i am investigating the horses   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, as Paco, Wuth and Myriandor start to have a look at the horses i need surprise rolls from each of them!   Myriandor: Do the arrows have any distinctive markings on them?   Dungeon Master (GM): well, they appear crudely made, all with black feathers and no discernible markings   Myriandor: How do we roll surprise?   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): Could you specify into what a surprise roll is.   Note: Ok, here I went basically with doing it similar to the way AD&D does it, with the thinking that Paco rolling a 1 was surprised but Myriador rolling a 20 was not. However, This is how we do it for this game:   DM ADDENDUM: 5E Surprise Roll Checks:   Make a Dexterity (Stealth) check for the goblins, rolling once for all of them.  Open the  goblin 's  Character Journal  and select the tab to view its character sheet. Under Skills, click on the d20 icon beside the Stealth skill to roll it.  Compare the result to the characters’ passive Wisdom (Perception) scores. Any character whose score is lower than the goblins’ check result is surprised and loses his or her turn during the first round of combat (see “Surprise” in the Starter Set rulebook).
Buddy D.: rolling d20( 1 ) = 1   Myriandor: rolling 1d20( 19 ) = 19   Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "Good place for an ambush ahead"   Shortbow : Target: Wuth Goblin #02 Attack:  21  |  9 Damage:  4  piercing   Shortbow : Target: Paco Goblin Attack:  10  |  22 Damage:  3  piercing   Shortbow : Target: Myriador Goblin Attack:  23  |  11 Damage:  6  piercing   Dungeon Master (GM): ok as you guys started to have a look at the horses 3 arrows come flying from either side of the path , it appears that Wuth and Myriandor were struck but Paco is ok what do you folks do now?   Vin: (Are you going to tell them how much damage they took?)   Dungeon Master (GM): 4 damage for Wuth and 6 for Myriandor   Myriandor: Myriandor goes running towards where the arrows came from   Dungeon Master (GM): ok Myriandor!   Vin: (Want us to roll initiative at this point?)   Buddy D.: 17.18 INITIATIVE  (4.18) Paco Bedo Paco, the Elf Ranger, gets ready to make an attack move! The last one appeared to be trying to run north.   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): I'll just go through the normal rules for going unconscious as a comparison. They remain at 0 hit points and makes 1 death save a turn until stabilized; whether through success, or assistance. 3 successes and they are stabilized, they regain 1 hit point after 1d4 hours. 3 failiures and they die.   Buddy D.: rolling 1d20( 6 ) = 6 rolling 1d20( 12 ) = 12   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): DC 10 for a success BTW.   Buddy D.: only 1 arrow retrieved   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): No modifiers.
Vin: Someone else can stabilize them with a DC 10 medicine check.   Dungeon Master (GM): buddy there is an arrow recovery macro for those that have missile weapons, use that, it's the one thing i brought over from 1e/2e   Myriandor: (So 50/50 chance live/die   Dungeon Master (GM): see this is why i would still do the 1 hp lost per round until stabilized   RECOVER ARROWS or BOLTS/QUARRELS For Paco Bedo the Elf Ranger WHICH SAVES AS METAL VS. CRUSHING BLOW. AFTER 3 ROUND(S), Paco RECOVERS 2 UNIT(S) OF AMMUNITION.   Vin: (Not really, since you have a bunch of people around, probably some who know meds)   7 | 9 MEDICINE  (2) Arnie   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): Essentially, yes. You can actually get items which gives bonuses though, such as a cloak/ring of protection.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok concentrating on Myriandor now ok what do you need to succeed on that medicine roll?   Vin: 1 | 2 MEDICINE  (0) Vin (a 10)   Dungeon Master (GM): ok   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): Nat 20, = get 1 hp, recover consciousness. Nat 1 = two failiures. Getting hit = 1 failiure. Getting hit by an enemy within 5 ft. = auto crit, 2 failiures.   Myriandor: (Ack!!)   Vin: (Arnie and I aren't too great at this :P) "UMMM! Someone HELP her!"   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): It get pretty weird after a while with all the rules piled onto it though.   Dungeon Master (GM): i remember reading that wuth, now that you posted that so myri needs another death save at this point?   Myriandor: 7 DEATH SAVE  (0) Myriandor FAILED 1 of 3   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): 4 Healing to Myriandor Touch Cure Wounds SPELL SLOT LEVEL 1ALL SLOTS EXPENDED You good my guy.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok she is healed to 4 hp   Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "Damn Gobs"   Dungeon Master (GM): searching their bodies?   Vin: Sure!   Dungeon Master (GM): ok let me see what they have   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): Feel free to ask any questions you wish, I have the physical books on hand along with a bunch of PDFs on the rules.   Buddy D.: 7 | 16 PERCEPTION  (4) Paco Bedo   10 | 18 PERCEPTION  (4) Paco Bedo   7 | 20 INVESTIGATION  (3) Paco Bedo   Myriandor: Myri gets up   Wuth Nonvul drags the corpses of the horse corpses aside, clearing the road.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok they are wearing leather armor and have shields with a painted on image of a maw with sharp teeth. They all have a scimitar and shortbows, with a guiver of 20 arrows minus what was fired   Wuth Nonvul (Mushroom): Just ignore that second mention of corpses.   Vin fishes through goblin bodies as well.   Dungeon Master (GM): as Wuth moved the horse aside the gassing out fills the air with the stench of death! Paco does not really make out anything more other than what was mentioned, there is nothing more to note of the arrows other than the black feathers being used and standard arrow tips, on wooden shafts. Ok, nothing of any value nor any coinage is found upon the goblins.   Vin heads back to the wagons now that the goblins are dealt with.   Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "Anyone know any god that would work with Gobs as a maw with sharp teeth?"   Dungeon Master (GM): anyone wish to roam the woods to either side of the path?   Buddy D.: my comp battery is going to die brb   Dungeon Master (GM): you have a plug nearby buddy?!   Myriandor: Myri will walk in the woods   Wuth Nonvul: I'll accompany them.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok move your token where you want to walk Myriandor ok looks like myriandor and Wuth have a look to the south while Paco has a look on the north side Myri and Wuth just see dense foliage all around them Buddy move Paco off the path were you want to go   Wuth Nonvul: I sense a foul disturbance. Trees that is.
Dungeon Master (GM): buddy from where you are now all you discern is foggy dense foliage   Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "You one of those that believe in some mystical force?"   Dungeon Master (GM): where Wuth is, is the same for him, just dense forest   Wuth Nonvul: I found nothing of worth, I return.   Dungeon Master (GM): ok buddy still only sees the fog and foliage from where he stands now   Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "Beware more ambushes ahead"   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, does Paco want to go in farther? he's the only one that didn't enter the woods.   Buddy D.: yes   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, so move him into the woods   Paco Bedo: i am a ranger   Dungeon Master (GM): ok   Buddy D.: search where the goblins came from   Dungeon Master (GM): buddy stumbles onto a path hidden by the woods! The path currently extends for as far as you can see in the fog what will Paco do now?   Paco Bedo: i return to the cart and tell the rest   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, tell the others and go from there folks   Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "Do we want to go after the Gobs? Perhaps the little one and the tortoise?"   Dungeon Master (GM): plus getting the cart up over the path to begin with   Paco the Elf Ranger Says: "sure that sounds great Vin"   Wuth Nonvul: I agree with Vin's line of thinking, good plan I must say.   Myriandor the Tiefling Fighter Says: "Lets do this"   Dungeon Master (GM): ok, it looks like the party all wishes to explore the north pathway so Ok, you tie off the oxen to the side of the road and proceed up the path.   Myriandor: TO THE NEXT MAP!!   Dungeon Master (GM): put all of your tokens in a marching order along that path and then i will copy paste onto the next map ok here we are traveling along the new smaller pathway you can move your tokens and tell me what you are doing/ where you are looking, searching/investigating as you move along   Vin tries to stay on the lookout for more goblins as they travel.   Dungeon Master (GM): i'm guess buddy lost power   Vin: 16 | 7 PERCEPTION  (0) Vin   Wuth Nonvul will move along the treeline, keeping an eye out for anything moving   Dungeon Master (GM): you don't see any more goblins as you proceed forward   Myriandor: Myri has her greatsword resting on her shoulder looking ahead for any danger   Wuth Nonvul: 13 PERCEPTION  (2)   Dungeon Master (GM): ok wuth you don't notice anything more than a few birds Wuth ok stop Paco sprung a trap!   Vin: (Alright, you want a save of some kind?)   Dungeon Master (GM): ok Paco first give me a perception check on that spot   Vin: 13 | 10 PERCEPTION  (4) Paco Bedo   Dungeon Master (GM): you need 15 or better ok now give me a dexterity check   Vin: 22 | 16 DEXTERITY SAVE  (6) Paco Bedo   Dungeon Master (GM): ok you spring a Snare Trap but it does not snag you! ok, you all can continue on ok stop Myriandor what is your passive perception? roll it   Myriandor: 11
